Well, speaking of SACRIFICE, pretty hard to top THIS candidate. The greatest sacrifice of all, FOR all. IF we choose to recognize it and put our TRUST IN his sacrifice.
Man on FireMan on Fire
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $0.01
Sacrifice has all the more impact(as above)when it's based upon a true story. This one's a grabber and one of the better movies in recent years.
ShaneShane
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $4.94
Shane says: "A gun is just a tool, Marian, like a shovel, an axe, anything. A gun is as good or as bad as the man using it. Remember that." I guess Shane was a Republican! Actually, the depth of his sacrifice is even more evident in the original novel, but the movie is better for other reasons.
CasablancaCasablanca
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $7.44
More sacrifice in a good cause. On my list of BEST SCREEN ROMANCES.
Davy Crockett: King of Wild FrontierDavy Crockett: King of Wild Frontier
Buy used from: $1.60
My favorite scene is the late night singalong of the defenders of the Alamo. All the more powerful because they know it's their last. Good song too(actually written by Crockett). I have it in my music collection.
On the Waterfront (Special Edition)On the Waterfront (Special Edition)
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $7.29
Terry Malloy says "I coulda been somebody'. Well he becomes one when he risks life and limb for the other dockworkers. Brando won the Oscar for Best Actor in a highly competitive year.
HavanaHavana
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $3.25
A modern day Casablanca. I think this may be Redford's best movie. Now THERE'S a surprising statement! On my list of BEST MOVIES SINCE 1980, and my BURIED TREASURES list.
Serpico (Widescreen Edition)Serpico (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $3.25
As, I said before: all the more impressive when it's based upon a true story. Police officer Frank Serpico wages a lone crusade against corrupt city police.
HombreHombre
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $6.99
Paul Newman in a very heroic role.Actually the woman portrayed by Diane Cilento(Sean Connery's ex-wife) is pretty heroic here too. On my list of BEST WESTERNS...MOVIES, NOT SANDWICHES OR HOTELS
The Road WarriorThe Road Warrior
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $4.60
Transformed from a self-interested loner into a hero. Mel Gibson's best film, methinks. Also on my list of MY FAVORITE ACTION MOVIES, and my BEST MOVIES SINCE 1980.
Farewell, My LovelyFarewell, My Lovely
Buy used from: $77.89
I love the heroic last line, delivered casually by Mitchum. In this film, he is just as good a Philip Marlowe as Bogart was. On my list of INSPIRATIONAL FILMS, and my BURIED TREASURES.
High Noon (Collector's Edition)High Noon (Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $6.50
Sheriff Will Kane stands alone as the defender of law and order in a wild west town.
Cat on a Hot Tin RoofCat on a Hot Tin Roof
Buy used from: $8.50
Okay, he doesn't risk life and limb, but Brick(portrayed by Paul Newman) is heroic in how he emerges from bitter cowardice to restore a broken family. I confess I'm biased in this choice because it's my all-time favorite film.
