Well, speaking of SACRIFICE, pretty hard to top THIS candidate. The greatest sacrifice of all, FOR all. IF we choose to recognize it and put our TRUST IN his sacrifice.

Shane says: "A gun is just a tool, Marian,like a shovel, an axe, anything. A gun is as good or as bad as the man using it. Remember that." I guess Shane was a Republican! Actually, the depth of his sacrifice is even more evident in the original novel, but the movie is better for other reasons.

My favorite scene is the late night singalong of the defenders of the Alamo. All the more powerful because they know it's their last. Good song too(actually written by Crockett). I have it in my music collection.

A modern day Casablanca. I think this may be Redford's best movie. Now THERE'S a surprising statement! On my list of BEST MOVIES SINCE 1980, and my BURIED TREASURES list.

Paul Newman in a very heroic role.Actually the woman portrayed by Diane Cilento(Sean Connery's ex-wife) is pretty heroic here too. On my list of BEST WESTERNS...MOVIES, NOT SANDWICHES OR HOTELS

I love the heroic last line, delivered casually by Mitchum. In this film, he is just as good a Philip Marlowe as Bogart was. On my list of INSPIRATIONAL FILMS, and my BURIED TREASURES.

Okay, he doesn't risk life and limb, but Brick(portrayed by Paul Newman) is heroic in how he emerges from bitter cowardice to restore a broken family. I confess I'm biased in this choice because it's my all-time favorite film.
