GoodFellas (Two-Disc Special Edition)GoodFellas (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $8.66 / Used from: $3.89
My personal favorite of all-time. The best gangster movie of all-time and easily, one of the best overall flicks ever. Scorsese brilliantly juxtaposes scenes of family greatness with those of bleak criminal action. The performances are superb examples of action, delivery, and nuance.
Taxi Driver (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)Taxi Driver (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $15.99 / Used from: $9.98
A grimy film that perfectly reflects its grimy subject matter. Travis Bickle is one of film history's most complex characters. When you talk about super heroes, he truly is one minus the tights and powers. An utter masterwork of shifting tones and flowering angst.
Raging Bull (Special Edition)Raging Bull (Special Edition)
Buy new: $15.49 / Used from: $2.29
The most obvious basis for the film's claim to greatness lies in Scorsese's devastating critique of the very codes of masculinity that shaped him as a filmmaker, and in Robert De Niro's performance, through which that critique is made flesh. De Niro presents the greatest acting performance in film history, in my opinion.
The Departed (Two-Disc Special Edition)The Departed (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $24.99 / Used from: $1.49
The Departed is a thoroughly engrossing gangster drama with the gritty authenticity and soupy morality that has infused director Scorsese's past triumphs. Featuring outstanding work from an excellent cast, some critics say the film even tops its source material (the thriller Infernal Affairs). The Departed marks a triumphant return to form for Scorsese; it's his best film since GoodFellas.
Mean Streets (Special Edition)Mean Streets (Special Edition)
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $3.15
A tight, intense masterpiece from Scorsese, writing collaborator Mardik Martin and the iconic stars. The movie's blazing energy is still astounding; the vérité street-scenes are terrific and Scorsese's pioneering use of popular music is genuinely thrilling.
Casino (Widescreen 10th Anniversary Edition)Casino (Widescreen 10th Anniversary Edition)
Buy new: $15.99 / Used from: $2.75
Martin Scorsese's Casino is an absolutely brilliant film that's an enthralling equal to his masterful GoodFellas. Demands to be seen at least twice. Vivid, fully cinematic, and impossible to look away from, Scorsese leaves his indelible signature on every frame.
The Aviator (Two-Disc Widescreen Edition)The Aviator (Two-Disc Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $6.49 / Used from: $0.18
A fast-moving, entertaining movie that boasts a fine performance by DiCaprio, who captures Hughes' brio, as well as the sadness that accompanied the gradual onset of insanity that turned Hughes into a legendary recluse. Scorsese is a master filmmaker back at the top of his game.
The King of ComedyThe King of Comedy
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $4.23
One of the most disturbing, thought-provoking and funniest films of the 1980s. This underappreciated Scorsese great is more relevant today than ever.
The Last Temptation of Christ - Criterion CollectionThe Last Temptation of Christ - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $35.49 / Used from: $10.00
Scorsese's film is a work of passion and faith, and admirable for the way it fearlessly explores its themes, disregarding canonical dogma in search of human truth.
Gangs of New York (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)Gangs of New York (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $1.78
This is historical filmmaking without the balm of right-thinking ideology, either liberal or conservative. Mr. Scorsese's bravery and integrity in advancing this vision can hardly be underestimated.
