George Cukor's sweet film version of Louisa May Alcott's sentimental book features an especially vibrant Kate, giving a wonderful performance as tomboyish Jo March.

The best of Kate's films with Spencer Tracy, and the one that is based on true equality. Kate and Spencer are married lawyers on opposite sides of a domestic case. Excellent script by Garson Kanin and Ruth Gordon, and direction by George Cukor.

Humphrey Bogart's Charlie Alnutt calls Kate's missionary Rose Sayer a "psalm-singing, skinny old maid" after she dumps his booze overboard.

Lurid subject matter becomes pure poetry in Tennessee Williams' hands. Kate plays the seriously deluded Violet Venable, who wants niece Elizabeth Taylor to have a lobotomy so she can't reveal how her son Sebastian died suddenly, last summer. Both Kate & Elizabeth Taylor received Oscar nominations.

Kate received her second Oscar for this film; a "sympathy win," really-- because Spencer Tracy died ten days after the film finished, and Kate had loved and cared for him for over two decades.

Proving she really CAN DO ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING, Kate made her musical theatre debut in Alan Jay Lerner's musical about fashion designer Coco Chanel. Kate won the Tony Award, but she is an actress desperately searching for her "singing voice" here.

Kate received her fourth Oscar as Ethel Thayer, trying to bring her husband Norman (Henry Fonda) and their estranged daughter Chelsea (Jane Fonda) together during what will likely be their final summer together. Henry Fonda received his only Oscar for this, his final film.
