A good sampling of alternative hip hop5
Def Jux has released a really good primer to the alt rap/alt hip hop movement. While you don't get anything like the old skool minimalism you'll find in a kool kids cut or vocoder style from T-Pain/lil Wayne/your gramma (thank god), what you do get is folks who are trying to make music that isn't simply someome rhyming over smapled cuts but making music that rap is a part of. The El-P, Aesop Rock and Murs tracks have been around for a while, so if you like the alt stuff you probably have heard them for years already, but everything else on here was new (to me anyway), and I thuroughly enjoyed them.

Free Hip Hop - Nacho Usual Stuff4
This Definitive Jux sampler (which should be free) is a good record to throw in the mix. If you like hip hop - especially this "indie-hop" stuff that I guess you could call some of this - you'll like the value (FREE), the names (El-P, Mighty Underdogs, etc.), and what you may very well discover if you're not familiar. Usually, free music is relegated to severely underground independent label compilations or heavily edited mainstream tracks - this sampler is the opposite, with lushly produced tracks and completely unedited songs. That's right, kids - Parental Advisory!

I recommend downloading this if you have the time, the Amazon.com MP3 downloader (it's required?), and a want for some fresh new sounding hip-hop!

Definitly Def Jux5
I'm pretty new to Def Jux, but so far I am a huge fan. I started by listening to Cage's free EP on Amazon, then found this. I absolutly love the El-P track. It's quite good. This is rap.
