"ominious building dramatic tension"
Varese Sarabande and Jan A.P. Kaczmarek present a moving score - "Lost Souls", a suspenseful religious thriller keeping with the story-line of exorcism. Director Janusz Kaminski made the right choice for the composer, theme of the "Anti-Christ" coming to earth.
Kaczmarek use of strings and woodwinds to describe dramatic tension building motifs, much in the way Howard Shore tends to score his works. The full choir cues are the ultimate, during the exorcism the drama builds, shades of a "requiem mass" come to mind. "MAYA'S THEME", always lingering about, weaving through the entire score, beautifully haunting and very addictive to the listener, last track "LOST SOULS - END CREDITS", lonely, lost and sad.
Not all drama and suspense, there are oboe and piano motifs very softly in "THE PENTACLE", this track is interwoven with hints of darkness, effective within every fibre of your body, full choir joins in, and your completely helpless...Kaczmarek has made his point, and made it well.
The tension is always present, in every track you never know where, when, what or how...but it's always there. Kaczmarek score works perfectly, he's created and completed his assignment in fine fashion..."movie-music collectors", this is a keeper!

"Souls" of Darkness
The soundtrack to the chilling supernatural thriller,"Lost Souls", was one of the most unexpected things ever to come along in my CD collection. The composer utilizes many soft subdued melodies that ache with loneliness and melancholy, especially in the tracks for the "Main Title" and "Maya". He is also able to hint at the darker terrors of the unknown, using dark religious music and choir. The tracks "The Pentacle", "The Bridge", "Satan's Church", and "Last Ride" all all examples of the more dramatic moments. Overall this score yeilded a delightful surprise, full of excellent music: sad, haunting, scary, and exciting. It is a perfect complement to the creey, chilling film itself, and is one that collectors of horror film soundtracks and religious music should definitely check out.
