ANOTHER SOILD EFFORT BY JERRY GOLDSMITH
"The Wild Rovers",a western buddy-type movie directed by Blake Edwards(of Pink Panther fame,and husband of Julie Andrews)has recieved an exciting symphonic score written by one of the recent masters of the genre,Jerry Goldsmith...This album has been issued a couple of times previously,but this edition is the definitive version...Previously missing cues have been added,and some of the familiar cues have been re-mixed in order to conform to the composer's original intentions...When "The Wild Rovers" was released into the theatres the film,the score,everything about it had first been butchered by the studio,over the protests of director Edwards..No wonder the resulting mess was a big fat zero at the box-office..Originally the album was released on M.G.M as an L.P...later Ted Turner's short-lived experiment in soundtrack cd production paired this score(in its original L.P. format)with another Goldsmith effort entitled"The Last Run"..This edition,from Filmscore Monthly,is expanded and complete...If you like Goldsmith in his prime then add this cd to your collection.

What is not to love??
A remarkable soundtrack from Jerry Goldsmith that gallops along at full symphonic speed. This is vintage Goldsmith in full Americana mode, often tipping the hat to Copland. In my opinion, one of his top ten soundtrack gems!

Goldsmith's Lightest Cowboy Music
One of the types of genres where Jerry Goldsmith excells at is western, and in spite of the fact that this is a Blake Edwards movie, "Wild Rovers" is no exception.
Blake Edwards is known for his light and intelligent comedies and dramas, but it's interesting that he tackled a cowboy movie, and even more interesting, the fact that he hired Goldsmith, instead of his usual composer Henry Mancini. No matter. The truth is this is a very good work by Goldsmith. The main theme is wonderful, keeping the true spirit of the western genre; even as a song sung by his daughter Ellen (Smith, in the album)and Sheb Wooley, that theme is truly remarkable. Also, there are the tracks 'Bronco Bustin'' and 'Wild Horses', which are very exciting and enjoyable. The rest is music conveys how the drama develops between the characters played by William Holden and Ryan O'Neal. It's fine music.
The idea of coupling the original film soundtrack and the album re-recording allows the listener to compare the two pieces of music, as only FSM knows how to do it. It may get tiresome sometimes, but Goldsmith's music for "Wild Rovers" is incredible and makes you relax, feeling that you are traveling through those western landscapes with the "Wild Rovers."
