![]() | District 9 (Two-Disc Edition)
Buy new: $22.99 This is the best live action movie I've seen this year. Not only is the story well told, the FX are better than anything else this year. This film's budget was $30 million. Astounding. Everybody should see this movie.
![]() | Up (Single Disc Widescreen)
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $6.00 I think my jaw is still in the theater. Pixar has yet again presented to us moviegoers a PERFECT film. The story, the attention to detail, the FULLY DEVELOPED CHARACTERS. WOW, I'm not sure how I'm going to see a better movie this year. This is clearly the best one so far.
![]() | Inglourious Basterds (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $21.49 Right now it's a three way tie between this movie, Up, and District 9 for my favorite movie of the year. Of the three this one killed nazis the best. I love this movie!
![]() | Where the Wild Things Are [Theatrical Release]
I'm still digesting this movie, but I can't stop thinking about it. Amazing facial expression FX!
![]() | Away We Go
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $5.99 A very pleasant surprise and also one of the best written films of the year. Really, really good.
![]() | Trick 'r Treat
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $9.26 Warner Bros. committed a social atrocity by denying this film a theatrical release. This is a new Halloween tradition that should be at least two years old by now. Warner Bros. should hang their heads (studio heads that is) in shame. Must see for any Horror fan!
![]() | Coraline (Single-Disc Edition w/ 3D)
Buy new: $11.49 / Used from: $6.10 An amazing example of technical know-how mixed with a pretty scary little story. This is Horror for kids, don't think otherwise.
![]() | Star Trek (Two-Disc Digital Copy Edition)
Buy new: $23.49 / Used from: $7.00 If you've ever liked Star Trek you should check this movie out. It's a really well done fun time at the movies.
![]() | The Midnight Meat Train
Buy new: $15.99 / Used from: $2.63 It took me about half the film's runtime to decide that I absolutely loved it. Now I have to re-read Books of Blood. A must see for Horror fans.
![]() | Watchmen: The Director's Cut (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $24.99 / Used from: $11.39 While my bladder was in an hour long state of torture toward the end, the film was totally worth the pain. It's a cool movie that will divide folks who see it. Haley for Best Supporting Actor!
![]() | Land of the Lost
Buy new: $15.99 / Used from: $4.60 This movie is extremely ridiculous and most importantly, hilarious. I want a Grumpy right now!
![]() | Observe and Report
Buy new: $21.49 / Used from: $2.21 I love this movie. Infinitely re-watchable. This is the funniest movie I've seen this year. This should be a cult classic in a couple of years. Tell your friends.
![]() | Zombieland [Blu-ray]
I love this movie and although it could have used some more zombie action in the middle it still rocked. Besides, the characters actually did things that made sense.
![]() | Underworld: Rise of the Lycans
Buy new: $10.49 / Used from: $3.90 I don't think I've ever seen so many werewolves on screen. This is pure popcorn fluff with some really good fx. Not for film snobs but for movie lovers.
![]() | Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (Two-Disc Limited Special Edition + Digital Copy)
Buy new: $19.99 I really do love this series and this movie is a nice balm after the bitter that was Transformers 2. While I still like Prisoner of Azkaban the best (nothing beats Buckbeak) this movie rests squarley on the shoulders of its young actors, who display a comfort and ease that is uncanny and fun to behold. It's Harry Potter, see it.
![]() | The Brothers Bloom [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $23.99 This story of two con-men brothers, their near silent explosive expert partner Bang Bang, and their last mark is really, really well done. From the people that brought us the excellent noirish Brick. Worth a look if you like quirky characters.
![]() | Thirst
Buy new: $19.99 / Used from: $14.94 Forget the current teenybopper light vampire sensation and seek out this movie that actually has substance, story, and quality. Twisted, funny, violent. Or what vampires should be.
![]() | The Hangover (Unrated Edition) [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $15.99 Oh yes, there have been days like this. A very funny, very adult film.
![]() | Monsters vs. Aliens
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $4.00 Pretty good little flick, although a step down in terms of quality from Kung Fu Panda for Dreamworks. The standouts are Bob and Insectosaurus. Hopefully we'll get a sequel where the monsters can really shine.
![]() | G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (Two-Disc Edition)
Buy new: $22.99 / Used from: $12.79 Out of the two summer movies released this year based on toy lines amazingly it's the one without giant robots blowing things up that emerges the best. Snake Eyes is awesome, the movie doesn't suck, and I think I'm in love with Scarlett.
![]() | Grace
Buy new: $21.49 / Used from: $2.93 This is a must see Horror movie that should have been given a real theatrical run. Support it now by buying it or renting it. Tell your friends. This is a good Horror movie.
![]() | Orphan [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $18.99 / Used from: $14.39 This movie is great. Isabelle Fuhrman as Esther gives one of the best performances by a child actor in a long time. Highly recommended.
![]() | Last House on the Left (2009)
Buy new: $18.99 / Used from: $3.90 A vastly superior remake over the original film, this movie is more sensible but also slightly more realistic. Not a good time at the movies but a good, horrifying Horror film.
![]() | Surveillance
Buy new: $19.99 / Used from: $5.49 Offputting and surreal, this movie is not for everyone and, with the limited cast, not too hard to figure out. But it is one heckuva twisted ride. French Stewart and Bill Pullman give wickedly good performances.
![]() | Splinter
Buy new: $21.49 / Used from: $6.58 A very good little Horror film with a small cast and mucho terror. A very interesting creature design that owes more than a little bit to John Carpenter's The Thing. Still, a great way to dismember 80 some minutes of your time. A cool movie.
![]() | Alien Raiders
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $1.32 It could be swept aside as a knockoff of Carpenter's The Thing meets Stephen King's The Mist, except it is done so well and played extremely straight. Very good movie that needs a just as well done sequel.
![]() | Franklyn
Buy new: $25.49 / Used from: $10.90 If more people went and saw films like this, or if more films like this actually made it to theaters, quality cinema might actually make a comeback. A psychological sci-fi drama that is really cool and deserves to be seen.
![]() | The Collector [Theatrical Release]
One of the better Horror films of the year. Amazon, fix your bloody listmania "add a product" search engine, half the time it doesn't make any sense!
![]() | Taken (Two-Disc Extended Edition)
Buy new: $20.99 / Used from: $9.24 Pretty amazing turn for Liam Neeson, you do not want to get in this man's way!
![]() | My Bloody Valentine 3D (2-disc special edition)
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $3.68 Overall there isn't too much to separate this film from others in the slasher genre, except the well used 3-D technology.
![]() | Sorority Row [Theatrical Release]
A typical teen slasher that doesn't apologize, boasting some strong characters and an even stronger supporting role for Carrie Fisher as the shotgun toting house matron. I had fun with this.
![]() | I Love You, Man
Buy new: $16.49 / Used from: $5.35 Surprisingly good.
![]() | Knowing
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $3.23 This movie has some of the best disaster fx to come along in quite awhile. It's also pretty entertaining. If you don't expect too much from the acting this is an enjoyable movie that will provoke discussions amongst you and your friends.
![]() | Alien Trespass
Buy new: $19.49 / Used from: $2.38 A very nice and very fun homage to the old scifi clunkers of yesteryear. It's not supposed to be good!
![]() | The International
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $1.80 Is this movie really all that good? Probably not. But it does help to accentuate my growing distrust of any and all banks and it does have one really, really awesome shootout scene. There can never be enough conspiracy theory type movies. Worth a rental.
