![]() | Wanted (Single-Disc Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $2.51 (B) Self-consciously ridiculous, over the top actionflick from Bekmembetov. Good fun.
![]() | Night of the Demons
Buy used from: $29.07 (B-) Quintessentially 80s-y horror flick. An obvious rip of "Evil Dead" and "Demons", but a reasonably stylish, creepy one. The characters tend to be pretty annoying, though.
![]() | Trackman
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $2.21 (C+) Russian slasher pic has a lot of good atmosphere and visuals, though the actual horror scenes are a tad humdrum.
![]() | Elephant: A Film By Gus Van Sant
Buy new: $5.98 / Used from: $1.78 (C-) Pretentious Van Sant take on Columbine reminds us all how boring high school was. The actual shooting is fairly striking, but the rest is an exercise in tedium, and decidedly does not make the end more impacting.
![]() | Pin
Buy used from: $13.77 (B-) Pysch-thriller about a nutty kid-turned-dude who thinks his father's anatomy doll is a real part of the family. It has a lot of odd touches, though the general story is a bit by the book. It works, though.
![]() | Sam Raimi's Crimewave [ NON-USA FORMAT, PAL, Reg. 2 Import - Great Britain ]
Buy used from: $23.75 (C-) Early Raimi pic written by the Coens is nevertheless totally forgotten, and with reason. The Coens' purely farcical scripts are their weakest, and Raimi doesn't have much money to work with. To put it bluntly, it ain't funny.
![]() | Millions
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $2.75 (B) Family drama made by, of all people, Danny Boyle. Not normally my kinda thing, but Boyle's name drew some interest, and he didn't disappoint. His strange visuals are still in tact, the lead children are excellent, and it's just generally good natured and enjoyable.
![]() | Black House
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $4.97 (C+) Korean thriller is well-acted and generates some atmosphere, though it's almost painfully slow at times, and is ultimately nothing new.
![]() | The Witches
Buy used from: $34.27 (B-) Fairly standard issue Hammer pic, though the modern setting is novel, and standard Hammer stuff is still pretty good. I also particularly like occult conspiracy pics, though the end is a bit cheesy.
![]() | The Dead Girl
Buy new: $22.49 / Used from: $0.50 (C-) Indie drama is comically bleak with outrageous overacting, so nitwit critics think the acting is great, and that it's oh so deep. Only the lovely and naturally sad-looking Rose Byrne maintains her dignity, with a fine performance in the one truly effective segment. By the way, this was directed by a woman, of all things.
![]() | Demons II
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $6.89 (C-) I was never in love with the supposedly classic original, and this is already inferior, with no style, a totally incoherent plot and unremarkable gore.
![]() | Mansion of the Living Dead
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $12.50 (F) I'd never seen a flick from uberhack Franco, and he didn't disappoint, I guess. Nauseating sexploitation with dumpy women and some totally tacked on horror. Also, lots and lots of walking. One of the worst films I've seen.
![]() | Sukiyaki Western Django
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $2.18 (B-) Incredibly weird Miike Western which is highly conscious of the incestuous relationship between Samurai pics and Westerns. It doesn't totally work, but it looks good and is quite interesting.
![]() | Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex But Were Afraid to Ask
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $5.47 (B-) Early Allen anthology pic is uneven, but it's very fun at times, and the weaker parts end soon enough. Wilder is great, as usual.
![]() | Reeker
Buy new: $22.49 / Used from: $7.03 (B-) Supernatural slasher isn't groundbacking, but it's quite competent and has an enjoyable villain. Cliched ending, though.
![]() | Fear City
Buy used from: $17.99 (B-) Exploitation thriller about a killer targeting strippers is amusingly sleazy. It's also atypically well-made for such material, as most Ferrara films are, and the cast is solid enough.
![]() | Sole Survivor
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $8.35 (C+) Moody horror pic about a plane crash survivor who is haunted/assailed by the dead. It has some nice scenes, and I like the premise, but it lacks any narrative thrust.
![]() | Count Yorga, Vampire
Buy used from: $2.49 (C) Reasonably competent low-budget horror, but it's hopelessly dry.
![]() | Visitor Q
Buy new: $24.99 / Used from: $12.79 (C-) Miike flick tries very, very hard to be shocking, but I mostly found it forced and tedious. The bargain basement production values don't help either.
![]() | Delirium: Photo of Gioia
Buy new: $9.95 / Used from: $4.15 (C-) Late 80s giallo lacks the flair and intrigue of the early 70s heyday. Not one of L. Bava's better pics, and his career is, generously speaking, quite uneven.
![]() | Urban Legend
Buy new: $8.49 / Used from: $1.99 (C) Much-maligned pic is actually quite competent, if unremarkable, up until the outrageously bad climax. Also, it's amazing how fast pics get dated.
![]() | Zatoichi the Blind Swordsman, Vol. 11 - Zatoichi and the Doomed Man
(B) One of the better Z flicks yet, with another enjoyable performance from Katsu and a relatively full and intriguing story.
![]() | Bad Dreams
Buy used from: $23.95 (B-) Shameless Nightmare on Elm Street III rip is redeemed by being superior to that film. It's pretty eerie at times and plays itself straight, unlike so much late 80s horror.
![]() | The Dead Pit
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $6.57 (B-) Late 80s zombie/asylum pic deserves credit for twisting the genres somewhat, and actually trying to generate atmosphere. It's not w/o the standard low-budget flaws, but it's fun.
![]() | Room 205
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $1.88 (B-) I've seen about a hundred American and Asian vengeful chick-ghost movies, so I guess it's time for a European one. It adds nothing new to the form, but the washed out, grainy visuals generate some genuine atmosphere, which is what this material needs. One of the better films like this I've seen in a while.
![]() | Incredible Hulk (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $18.99 / Used from: $1.93 (B) The prior movie looked terrible, but this one is quite energetic and entertaining. I'm not saying it isn't goofy, but in a good way, and it has a grade-A cast slumming it up nicely.
![]() | Icons of Adventure Collection (The Pirates of Blood River / The Devil-Ship Pirates / The Stranglers of Bombay / The Terror of the Tongs)
Buy new: $22.49 / Used from: $18.12 (B- for the pirate movies) The two pirate flicks here are both fun, solid action/adventures from Hammer. Blood River is better, cause in that one Lee has an eyepatch and a French accent!
![]() | Batman Begins [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $9.80 (B) A bit overlong, and it pales next to the sequel, this is still a pleasantly dark comic book movie. Also, I like to see the great C. Murphy get to ham it up a bit. Looks like he had fun with this.
![]() | Hamlet
Buy new: $8.49 / Used from: $3.69 (B+) Modern setting, but with the original language. Works quite well, and they do a good job of condensing the overlong original play. Hamlet is a good enough work that if you get a capable cast and competent director, it will work. And it does. Some say Hawke is too wooden as H, but I think the restrained approach works better.
![]() | O (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $10.49 / Used from: $1.09 (C+) Competently filmed and acted, but "Othello in high school" is just too silly a conceit to really work. Also, Shakespeare w/o the soliloquizing is pretty thin. However, this has gotta be the first and only film with the line, "Where's the %$@#ing scarf!!!"
![]() | The Substitute
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $3.13 (B) Danish horror comedy is a lot of fun. Not the most original premise, but the humor works, and it has a nice mix of humor and suspense.
![]() | Dead of Night/The Queen of Spades
Buy used from: $55.99 (B+ for Dead of Night) Famed horror anthology is possibly the best horror pic from the 30s or 40s. The quality varies a bit, but the best segments are truly excellent, and they're all at least solid.
![]() | Burn After Reading
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $1.99 (B-) Coens pic is pretty funny, well-acted and capably directed. Unfortunately, it doesn't blend the violence and comedy very well, and comes off as overly cruel and w/o sympathy. It's enjoyable enough, but is just another standard issue, post-Fargo Coens pic, and I'd hoped for better after the terrific "No Country..."
![]() | Alucarda
Buy new: $22.49 / Used from: $15.26 (B+) Ultra-surreal horror pic plays like a Mexican "Blood on Satan's Claw." It looks great despite the budget, and the affected overacting creates a sort of operatic feel that suits the pic well. Definitely a strange little gem, though not for all audiences. Moctezuma's "Mansion of Madness", however, isn't particularly good, Has some decent visuals, but it never comes alive. (C)
![]() | Death Race (Unrated Edition)
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $1.98 (D+) I wasn't really expecting this to be good, but what a mess. They take a camp classic and play it totally straight, but with lame, irritating and excitement-free action plus horrid cinematography. Also, the normally fun Statham is wasted.
![]() | The Prophecy
Buy new: $8.49 / Used from: $2.47 (C+) Eco-horror pic is, like many of the sort, overly pious and self-serious, not too mention talky. Nevertheless, the kill goo-bear is quite entertaining, once he finally shows up.
![]() | The Rapture
Buy new: $5.79 / Used from: $5.71 (B-) Religious thriller is indeed audacious, taking a fundamentalist worldview and portraying it w/o evident commentary either way. It's also quite well acted. On the other hand, not a whole helluva lot happens in the pic, though it never quite gets boring.
![]() | The Prophecy
Buy new: $8.49 / Used from: $4.98 (B+) Immensely entertaining apocalyptic horror film with a surprisingly strong cast. Walken and Mortenson, in particular, are very entertaining.
![]() | Wishing Stairs
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $5.75 (D) Incredibly dull, meandering and shock-free Korean horror flick.
![]() | Domino (Widescreen New Line Platinum Series)
Buy new: $6.49 / Used from: $0.74 (B-) T. Scott's ridiculously kinetic filmmaking keeps this interesting, though it's nearly collapses under the excess length. One more: "Vanilla Sky" (C+) Moderately entertaining "What is real?" pic, but it lacks the mysterious ambience of the best of these films, and Cruz is grating.
