Why Prilosec OTC Is Different
|
PPI (Proton Pump Inhibitor)
When you eat, millions of tiny pumps in your stomach produce acid to break down food — heartburn occurs when these excess acids reflux into your esophagus. Prilosec OTC works by directly blocking many of these pumps. Your stomach produces enough acid to digest food, but reduces excess acid — making it the most effective heartburn treatment choice and the #1 doctor recommended OTC acid reducer.† Prilosec OTC blocks heartburn for 24 hours with one pill a day.*
Antacids
Antacids neutralize the acid in your stomach. Unlike the proactive PPI, antacids are commonly taken after you eat or when pain begins. While no heartburn treatments cure the condition, antacids provide only temporary relief.
H2 Blockers
H2 Blockers relieve heartburn symptoms by reducing the acid production. They begin working within an hour and last for 12 hours. H2 Blockers are not as effective in treating severe heartburn as PPIs.
* It’s possible with Prilosec OTC. Use as directed for 14 days for treating frequent heartburn.

Customer Reviews
A Lifesaver!
As my acid reflux worsened over the years, I made the usual progression from antacid tablets, to Pepcid AC, and eventually to prescription medications like Prevacid and Nexium. Prevacid works great but it still requires a prescription and Nexium caused side effects in me. Once Prilosec was offered over the counter I gave it a try and was very impressed. After a week or two of taking it every day, I was able to decrease the dosage to the point where I only take it as needed now. Once I feel heartburn starting, or I eat something guaranteed to give me heartburn, I just take one of these and its gone in about 30 minutes...and when I say gone I mean gone for 10-12 hours.
I highly recommend this product to anyone who suffers acid reflux or chronic heartburn.
Great Product
I suffered from heartburn everyday regardless of my diet. I now take 1 Prilosec a day and have no heartburn anymore!
Information on Prilosec from an RN and Prilosec user
These medications, like Prilosec, and the stronger Nexium, are meant to be taken daily, not on an "as needed" basis like you might take Tums or Rolaids. Of course, they're meant to relieve heartburn, also called Acid Reflux, or GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease.)
To work the best, take it routinely--every day--just as you would take Blood Pressure medication. AND, be sure your doctor or health care provider KNOWS you are taking this or any other over-the-counter (OTC) med. Some interact with prescription medications that are more important for you to take.
If a person is still having on-going heartburn, mid-chest pain, pain in your throat, these CAN be heart symptoms too...GET CHECKED OUT!
Once you know you only have simple heartburn, easily controlled by the Prilosec then you're ok to take it. But anyone with severe heartburn: up half the night due to discomfort, sleeping sitting up, and that sort of thing, needs to really see a doctor and make sure what is going on.
In some cases patients with really severe heartburn that is affecting their lives on a daily (or nightly!) basis, need to seen a Gastroenterologist, the kind of specialist that can look down into your esophagus (swallowing tube) and stomach, and make sure there are no ulcers or anything else wrong. Depending on your insurance you may need a referral from your primary doctor to see a specialist for this; but if the heartburn is that severe, and any heart problems have been ruled out; then it may be the best thing to do.
I hope this helps a little. I know many people severely suffer with heartburn. Some other things that help: lose weight, put a brick, block or something about 2-4" under the top two legs of your bed to raise the head of the bed. That helps gravity work to keep the acid reflux from your stomach IN your stomach. Don't eat late at night. Eat a dinner at 6 pm or so, then don't snack or drink alcohol, as this will worsen the acid reflux (heartburn). Good luck!
