Good dictionary--remember that Cantonese is not usually written. Many characters actually obscure. And some Cantonese words have no character!

Good only for conversation--no characters appear, so homonyms all lump together and there are LOTS of 'em! I still like it.
Basic Cantonese: A Grammar and Workbook (Routledge Grammars)Basic Cantonese: A Grammar and Workbook (Routledge Grammars) by Virginia Yip

Very nice basic grammar with exercises to practice. But they sometimes test vocabulary they never present in the text. Still, very good for an understudied grammar.

Even better than the "basic" level text. Really gets into a lot of colloquial usage. Shows fine points of verbs and adjectives, which are so hard to absorb, and the use of sentence particles.
Cantonese: A Comprehensive Grammar (Routledge Grammars)Cantonese: A Comprehensive Grammar (Routledge Grammars) by Steven Matthews

THE exhaustive grammar, clearly written, very colloquial, not British English. A plethora of clear examples. Good backup for the serious.

Fun, clear, grammar & conversation book. Not organized intuitively. Glossary so-so. Good, yet idiosyncratic transliterations.

Very nice guide to the how and why of "hard pen" school writing. Characters are NOT Cantonese; only word order and grammar are! Be aware!

Excellent guide to stroke order and some histories of the most important basic or "root" characters.

A very good, totally "by ear" approach to Hong Kong Cantonese. Practical and "touristy," this has a natural content with no focus on grammar, per se. Sadly, no level 2, yet.
