hidden Hilliard Ensemble gem5
This CD should be cross-listed in the classical section. As an early choral music fan, I was surprised when I heard the soundtrack to this Canadian art house film, thrilled when I read in the trailers that the Hilliard Ensemble recorded the music, and ecstatic to find the CD. Mychael Danna has composed very convincingly within medieval modalities, ranging from chant to polyphony. Most of the music is a cappella, but solo cello and trumpet are also used to good effect. Let me highlight the ebullient Gloria, the warm and gentle Sanctus II, and especially the layered Agnus Dei which compares favorably to the 16th century setting of your choice.

A wonderful surprise...5
As an early music vocalist AND a fan of Mychael Danna's soundtracks, I was delighted to discover this film and the music that creates the mood throughout. I agree that it should be cross-listed with classical. The combo of pure male voices and heartbreaking cello is stirring... gives me chills.
If you like this CD, check out Danna's other great soundtracks. Though very different from this (he's astonishingly versatile), they all stand alone as CDs that you can throw on and enjoy from beginning to end. My favorites are 'Kama Sutra' and 'The Sweet Hereafter'. Apparently Danna also does his own new age CDs, but his soundtracks are what makes him one of my favorites.
