A how-to and where-to guide for catching fly fishing's toughest fish!
Fishermen brag about the biggest trout. They talk about the spookiest bonefish. They speak in high excitement of the speed of a false albacore. But the permit has taunted more fisherman than all of these fish, and has maintained a reputation for being truly impossible to catch.
Whole clubs of frustrated permit pursuers have been created. Stories abound of fishermen who have fished for years before catching their first permit. Now Jack Samson, legendary editor of Field and Stream for fifteen years, begins to turn the tide. Jack has pursued permit around the world and has gone further than any other writer in unlocking the mysteries of this fabled fish. Fly Fishing for Permit is his attempt to provide a complete guide to all aspects of permit fishing.
You'll learn what kind of equipment you'll need. You'll get thorough instruction on how to use that equipment. You'll get detailed information with maps for fishing all the famous permit areas of the world—Mexico's Ascension Bay, the Florida Keys, Belize, and many more. Finally, Samson has compiled an extensive selection of photos and tying recipes of the most effective flies—included the latest innovative patterns. Plus there's a bonus appendix of permit fishing stories from several of the most famous permit fishermen in the world including Gordie Hill, Winston Moore, and more. 92 black & white photographs, 16 color photographs, index.

flyfishing for permit
this is a very pleasant book to read, detailing the author's experiences flyfishing for permit. i enjoyed reading it. however, this book is very light on the basics or essentials of flats flyfishing. it is not really much of a "how-to" book, either in terms of permit specifically, or flats fishing in general. a lot of species-specific books of this type also mention in passing other species you may encounter in the same waters, and differences in how those species may be fished. this book has very little of that as well. although i am glad i bought it, standing alone i would not consider this book informative enough for a beginner or definitive enough for experienced flats fishermen.
Bitterly Disappointing Book
This is the second of Jack Samsons permit books i have purchased, and i was disappointed with the first and am bitterly disappointed with the second. My permit fishing knowledge was not improved dramatically from reading this book, apart from the section on striking by the english carp fisherman.
The biggest disappointment is the discussion about gear. There is no discussion of rod action for instance - it treats all rods the same without discussing the distance casting a fly or the rod action best for the job - yet in my experience a shortish cast with a heavy fly is needed, so a softer action rod is appropriate. Samson doesnt even comment. Leaders is another area that deserve attention but is not discussed in detail.
Production quality is poor with black and white photos in the main, and the coloured photos of flies omit the fairly obvious facts about how to fish each fly and what conditions best suit particular types of flies.
I bought this book expecting to pick up a lot of pragmatic technical tips about permit fishing, and a thorough, detailed discussion of gear, technique and tactics. I didnt get much of this at all, this book is more a nice collection of thoughts on permit fishing rather than a practical guide that will enable anyone but the most novice of permit fishermen to catch more permit. In my view Lefty Kreh's book Fly Fishing for Bonefish, Permit and Tarpon is a far more useful book.
Jack's Best!!!!
I had read all of Jack's writings on Permit long before I met him. Nothing had prepared me. He is the most intense, focused, driven Permit fisherman I've come across. Now he has given us another definitive book on fishing for Permit. Whether you hunt Permit with lures, live bait, or have lost your mind to the thrill of pursuing them with fly tackle, this book should be part of your library.
