A brand-new title in this important series gives parents easy-to-apply methods for helping to educate their children who are starting in kindergarten. It's a combination manual and advice book, suitable both for parents cooperating with their child's teachers in standard classroom settings, and for home schoolers, where parents take direct control of their child's studies. Making the Grade books are not textbooks, but practical curriculum guides. Written by authorities in elementary education, they advise parents on books, software, and other teaching tools. Each book presents guiding principles for teaching reading, writing, math, social studies, and science. Pages are perforated for multipurpose use. Each title in the series contains four curriculum sections:
* Promoting literacy-reading, writing, listening, and speaking
* Math-number patterns, problem solving, and other math-related concepts
* Science-life, earth, and physical sciences
* Social Studies-history, geography, economics, and culture
Each section outlines subject matter to be covered, augmented with planning and implementation strategies for parents and teachers. Advice includes ways to explain difficult concepts to children, suggestions for interactive learning in music and art, activities to promote hands-on learning experiences, and more. Sections titled In Your Community describe ways to integrate local cultural affairs, business activities, environmental concerns, and government functions with a child's education. Though written primarily for parents, this book will appeal to kindergarten teachers looking for new ideas and methods. It features maps, photos, and illustrations, many in color.

Editorial Reviews
Review
“In colorful, fun, engaging formats, these books have found a way to keep your hungry student learning and engaged in his or her education process. Every test comes with discussion and explanation sections, and the book has a style that lends itself more to having a good time rather than beating kids over the head with knowledge.”
—Parents Express, September 2004
“…a great supplement to your curriculum…”
—Sharon Fooshe and Mary Pride, Practical Homeschooling, July/August 2004

A very great start
I am a homeschooling mom on her third year in teaching the kids at home. My kindergarten aged child has never been to a traditional school so it was a bit necessary to understand just what it was that these youngsters needed to know.
This book has a great start to that. It certainly doesn't cover it all. There are always other subjects. But it hits the most general and very important ones. It has many good ideas that can be built upon and a whole entire curriculum made from it.
The pages tear out and for the most part that is positive when it comes to using the given worksheets. I like the fact that it has extra activities with it at each section end. It has a wide variety to it--an interdisciplinary feel.
It is very complete in the instructions and lessons. It is definitely recommended to those who homeschool or need extra practice for their children.
Excellent!
This book is excellent for the beginning home schooler, or just to suppliment the "regular" school student. It has lessons already written, on tear-out pages, and great ideas for continued study at the end of each lesson. It also has great assessments/checklists at the back.
Very easy to follow
What I liked about this book is that the lessons are very easy to follow. For each lesson the book tells you how to explain the concept to the child, what books are good to read, provides lots of practice for the kid and the lessons are simple. It covers lessons in literacy, math, social studies and science. I think this is a very complete book. This book is great to be used as a reference so parents know what their kids should be learning in school and is also great for homeschoolers.
