My French Kitchen: A Book of 120 Treasured RecipesMy French Kitchen: A Book of 120 Treasured Recipes by Joanne Harris
Buy new: $13.57 / Used from: $7.33
The fisherman's stew in this book is incredible, and the ingredients list is far simpler than I have seen elsewhere, yet it's the best recipe I've tasted. There are some unusual choices of meat/poultry. Hard to come by squab in your local market these days, but many could easily be replaced by more a traditional selection. Cornish Game Hen for Squab, for instance.
Breakfast BookBreakfast Book by Marion Cunningham
Buy new: $14.96 / Used from: $1.72
Quite possibly the only breakfast cookbook you would ever need (but that's no fun is it?). Marion Cunningham books are the ones I go to to find basic recipes for just about anything because 9 times out of ten they are perfect. Also, try her Supper Book.
Everyday Italian: 125 Simple and Delicious RecipesEveryday Italian: 125 Simple and Delicious Recipes by Giada De Laurentiis
Buy new: $20.47 / Used from: $13.99
Not always as elegant as say, perfect roast chicken, but always tasty, I use this cookbook regularly. The Marinara Sauce in here is the only one I make anymore, it's only 5, 6 ingrediants and goes on everything! Great parmesan pork chops, too.
Everyday Food: Great Food FastEveryday Food: Great Food Fast by Martha Stewart Living Magazine
Buy new: $16.47 / Used from: $7.95
I really like how the book is organized by seasons, even though (chargrinned look) I don't always follow it. Great recipes, wide variety with out alot of fuss or time. Imagine beautiful bubbly rhubarb crisp with strawberry ice cream, or roast cornish game hens with shallots and grapes sitting on your table.
Barefoot in Paris: Easy French Food You Can Make at HomeBarefoot in Paris: Easy French Food You Can Make at Home by Ina Garten
Buy new: $23.10 / Used from: $15.15
Again, down to earth ingredient lists and instructions with beautiful results you won't mind eating again and again. This is my favorite of hers, although all of her cookbooks are worth looking into. Shamefully I've only tried a meager handful of these recipes, because everytime I crack the book open I fall upon my favorite recipe...lemon chicken with croutons, and then I just make that.
The Bread Lover's Bread Machine CookbookThe Bread Lover's Bread Machine Cookbook by Beth Hensperger
Buy new: $12.83 / Used from: $8.00
I use this one on a weekly basis to make bread and it has so many choices, all of them good. There are some rare ingredients I did have to send away for...wheat gluten and special yeast. This is the exception to the simple ingredients rule that proves the rule I guess?
Peace, Love, & Barbecue: Recipes, Secrets, Tall Tales, and Outright Lies from the Legends of BarbecuePeace, Love, & Barbecue: Recipes, Secrets, Tall Tales, and Outright Lies from the Legends of Barbecue by Mike Mills
Buy used from: $15.97
Barbecue defies the simple and easy homemade rule, being as it is neither. BUT I love this book and it is constantly out on the counter even in cold, cold winter it provides hours of daydreaming about the spring and the day when it will be well and truly sensible to barbecue. The barbecue sauce and the magic rub alone are pretty much worth it's weight in gold.
The Gourmet Slow Cooker: Simple and Sophisticated Meals from Around the WorldThe Gourmet Slow Cooker: Simple and Sophisticated Meals from Around the World by Lynn Alley
Buy new: $13.59 / Used from: $8.49
Skip the baking projects (Why?? Why bake in a slow cooker?) and the beautiful recipes for Mexican entrees(the ingredient lists alone in that section could cause panic attacks and heart palpitations)and you have some elegant and simple meals you can leave on all day and come home to. .
