Take an in-depth look at the decade that defined a generation with The Great Depression, a four-part series from History.
In the first years of the Great Depression, banks and businesses failed in record numbers as America struggled to come to grips with the disaster. Examine the changes that swept the shaken nation, from the landslide victory of FDR in 1932, to the California migrations of Dust Bowl farmers, in ''The Great Shake-Up.'' Faced with hard times, Americans sought release wherever they could find it, from marathon dancing to going to the movies. ''Face the Music'' uses extensive film clips and photos to show how the media came of age to become an integral part of daily life. As the Depression lingered and the New Deal failed to live up to people's expectations, some Americans fought back against a system they felt had betrayed them. In ''Striking Back,'' rare footage and revealing interviews relive the desperate acts of people who had been pushed too far by the crisis. Finally, ''Desperate Measures'' shows how the approach of World War II did what all the protests and recovery programs failed to do - end the Great Depression.

Pedestrian
I was completely disappointed in this pedestrian rehashing of the story of the Depression...why must we see the same footage of breadlines and wall street panic that has been used countless times in documentaries since the 1950's...There MUST be fresh images and film that we haven't seen to death..how's about a little research!!!...anyway, it IS the story of that period in history but there is nothing fresh here!
Nothing more depressing than Mario Cuomo
The narrator was even more depressing than the event. Thank God those poor people didn't have to listen to Cuomo and go through economic depression at the same time
Great Depression or War on Business?
First of all, why would you want to listen to a statist like Mario Cuomo talk about another statist FDR and his failed policies that only prolonged the depression. There needs to be a fresh documentary from someone that wouldn't have just worshiped FDR like so many people did. This excuse for a man hurt our country in so many ways.
Roosevelt either wanted to start a Stalinist revolution or he just didn't have a clue. Actually there is a copy of a letter where FDR wrote to his treasury secretary for help in filling out his taxes, this guy gets way to much credit for being even close to smart.
The one fact to remember about the Depression is that it ended only after Roosevelt's War on Business and Prosperity ended.
