The Right Way to Play Chess (Right Way S.)The Right Way to Play Chess (Right Way S.) by David Brine Pritchard
Buy used from: $0.99
I actually bought this book for a friend first! Then I decided I needed a good primer even though I knew the basics. What a great idea it turned out to be. Right after studying and playing through this book I bumped up a few levels on my Chess Computer. These are the basics but they are good basics.
Excalibur 915W King Arthur DeluxeExcalibur 915W King Arthur Deluxe
This is a great chess computer. I like the way it plays. I am sure truly experienced players may find it too easy, but it has really helped me to utilize what I have been learning. I am seeing true progress!!

Buy new: $13.50 / Used from: $2.84
This was the second book in my tactics training. It was a great book to go through after the Bobby Fischer book. I felt my tactics improving as I went through it. I also realized how much more I still needed to work on tactics.

Fritz ChessFritz Chess
Buy new: $16.99 / Used from: $10.98
This is new for me. I think I prefer playing on an actual board but this has been a REAL challenge to play against. 3/07/08-update: I hate this program! The tech support was horrible and it wouldn't let me print out my own games. I took it off my computer!!
A First Book of MorphyA First Book of Morphy by Frisco Del Rosario
Buy new: $18.95 / Used from: $14.50
This was my first game collection focused on one person, and it was somewhat disappointing. The games were good and Morphy was brilliant but the layout and tone of the book never seemed to inspire me. Update: This book is very over rated! The annotations are not instructive at all! Beim's book on Morphy is better.

Chess Fundamentals, RevisedChess Fundamentals, Revised by Jose R. Capablanca

The best parts of this book are the chapters on endgame strategy and the annotated games. I think the revisions are a little over the top and were not needed.

Simple Chess: New Algebraic EditionSimple Chess: New Algebraic Edition by Michael Stean
Buy new: $9.95 / Used from: $4.85
GREAT GREAT book on Strategy! It is very instructive and clears up a lot of the concepts we see mentioned in game annotations such as "weak square", "bad bishops" etc. etc. This a great strategy book for a beginner. I will come back to it MANY times. Tactics are number 1 but strategy IS important!
