| This is my best effort to create an online bookstore that will enable me to recommend various books that have been relevant to my evolving career as a self-taught, self-teaching naturalist who has used writing to reinforce her learning. The first four on this page are books I wrote in the 1970s and 1980s while I was getting started. For ten years, while I was still teaching English for a living, I wrote a weekly natural history column for local newspapers, asking myself questions and answering them as I went. It was an excellent apprenticeship for a bookish old English teacher like me, whose midlife crisis had awakened her to the natural world, and my columns provided me with the first drafts for what later became chapters in my books. The last two titles I've included here are my favorite reference books, which I still value, use, and recommend to fellow beginning naturalists — and also to the parents and teachers of young naturalists, who are beginning when I wish I had begun. | ||
