Customer Reviews

Extreme Comfort5
I've owned the New Balance 992 for more than a full year. In that time, I've used them for everything from casual wear to long walks/hikes several days in a row and they've provided good support and comfort every step of the way. I'm not a runner, so I can't comment about that type of performance, but even weeklong vacations to places like Washington DC where I've been on my feet all day every day haven't been a problem. They offer just the right mix of support and comfort and the mesh allows your foot to breathe a bit.

I've had good luck buying New Balance in the past, and these have been no exception to the rule. If you plan to use them for anything more than casual wear, then I highly recommend purchasing Sof Sole Athlete Insole. The insoles that come with the shoes are adequate but Sof Sole will really take your comfort to a whole new level.

Unbelievably perfect fit!5
Finally wore out(*) my old 991s after YEARS and bought these. The fit is even better, although they seem-- in my case at least-- to run about a half-size smaller than the 991s did. I normally buy my NBs at Sports Authority but got them for $35 less this time at Amazon through If The Shoe Fits. Look great and best of all, Made in USA, baby! Just for this one reason alone, in addition to my preferring NB products anyway, New Balance is the only brand I ever buy, although some of their stuff is also offshore as well-- be careful. Supporting the Chinese dictatorship and further worsening our trade deficit may be necessary evils when buying an mp3 player (or seemingly anything else nowadays) but thankfully they're completely unnecessary (for the moment) when buying running shoes. Sorry for the venting during a shoe review. :-) A great shoe, don't hesitate for a second to buy it!

(*) My 991s are still completely functional, just no longer very presentable.

A Good Running Shoe4
I've been using New Balance running shoes for over 25 years and they have never given me an injury that kept me from running, a record other shoes I've tried can't match (I first tried a pair of Z-coils, which both perform and hold up well but felt as is I were running on stilts. Then I bought a pair of ASICS Gel Enduro 3 Trail Running Shoe Mens and promptly gave myself a case of shin splints that took a full year to heal (how was I to know they were for trail running? You mean people run on TRAILS?)

My favorite models are/were the New Balance® 550 Cross Trainer and the 992.

I started trail and desert running in an attempt to run on a softer surface, but when I did I twisted my ankles in the 992s so many times that I eventually used those Asics on an actual trail (and they worked so well I wore them out completely, they are totally falling apart.)

I will probably replace both the 992s and the Asics with a pair of Mens New Balance 908 Trail Running Shoe, which are supposed to be good for both the street and for trails.

So, would I compare the new 992s to my first pair of NB? In truth they are almost certainly better shoes, but the leap from Army boots to Converse Chuck Taylor All Star Lo Top Black to NB was such a huge jump forward that its hard to match when you are comparing a bunch of high quality running shoes. The bottom line? I've never gone wrong with New Balance and the 992 is no exception. Firm, no shin splints, and no bad knees either. Worth the price and made right here in the US, too.
