Home for the holidays and hot for it.
I thought this was a nice collection of erotic fiction, all set during the holiday. And this is the best time for a little refresher. There are four novellas in all, from some of the leading erotica writers. And all are told very well and have some good spice to them. If you are looking for a diversion right now from the holiday frustrations coming up, get this one. It will take you worlds away. For a quickie, you might also try Sex Scenes: Erotica Excerpts from the Novels of Kim Corum.
4 Stars for the stories, 3 stars for Kindle version
The four stories in this collection - Vampire's Ball by Angela Knight, A Little Night Magic by Allyson James, Sweet Enchantment by Anya Bast, and A Christmas Kiss by Lora Leigh - were all worth the price of the book and made for good reading, especially if you are a fan of any of the authors. I won't go into many details in this review because some other reviewer can do a better job of that than I. What wasn't worth the price was the Kindle version of this book which had some really careless mistakes that the publishers should have caught.
All four stories happen around the Holidays. I bought this anthology mostly for Lora Leigh's story which is part of her Breed series - this one being Hawke's and Jessica's tale. Though a short story, I felt it was complete and satisfying. It has the author's usual action filled plot (but not as much as in her full length novels) and of course, the hot sex scenes. I'm not familiar with the other authors so I don't know if their stories in this collection is typical of their writing. However, their stories were well written with engaging characters and interesting story lines. Vampire's Ball is about Mageverse and is the tale of Ridge (a Vampire) and Kat (a latent Majae (= witch)). A Little Night Magic is about Naomi and Jamison who is a Changer (shape shifter). Sweet Enchantment is about the Fae and is a Seelie vs Unseelie romance. The main characters are Bella and Ronan.
The only frustrating aspect of this book is the errors in the Kindle version that I bought. Almost before the start of each chapter or section, a letter was missing. It was pretty easy to figure out what the first word should have been but I just don't understand how the publisher cannot have done a better job with the Kindle format. How hard can it be to use spell checker? Sometimes the missing letter was somewhere in the next few sentences. There were some spacing problems also. The formatting problems were not major enough to hinder my reading but after seeing the same errors over and over again, I got angry about the careless mistakes. After all, the Kindle version is not that much cheaper than the paper print version so the publisher should edit their ebook formats just as well as they do the paper print versions.
hot in some places
I bought this anthology for Lora Leigh and Angela Knight. Both stories were very satisfying. In Lora leigh's addition we are given Hawke and Jessica's story. It takes place about a year after Jessica was caught betraying the Breeds. For such a short story, I felt like I was still given another great slice of life with the Breeds. Its christmas time and Hawke has been waiting long enough for suspicions and anger against Jessica to die down. He is ready to claim his mate. Hawke was very romantic for a wolf under the mating heat. At first I thought that Lora Leigh was making the stories more tame or taking away from the mating heat but then I remembered that the breeds have gotten better with the hormones and medicines they've created to deal with the mating heat. The sex was still spicy Leigh style and the plot concerned the council and the drug they've created that hides their scents. I am fascinated by how this author is going through the plot and giving us a great story line.
In Angela Knight's story we are back in the world of the mageverse. I dont know how she makes it believable that the characters have to have sex to reveal their power but it works.LOL. I have no problem believing it. The story is about Kat one of Lance's many children before he met his wife Grace and Ridge Champion the vamp selected to help her through her change. The plots very thin but I expect thats more to do with the anthology format then Knight's writing. While brief it was still an enjoyable short story read.
I know Allyson James from her dragon stories. In Hot for the holiday, we are following the story of Naomi a single mother and the return of her old lover Jamison. Jamison left Naomi for 2 yrs when he discovered he was a changer(he can shift into a lion) Jamison had no control and left to protect Naomi, although she never had any idea why he left. The story then goes down hill while we are given detail about a wierd changer colony thats after Jamison and Naomi just falling back into bed with her old lover. I was really surprised that the story was thin and just did not engage me at all.
Lastly was Anya Basts contribution. I have never read this author before so I dont know if the addition to this was typical of her writing. The story was better then James. It is about Ronan the unseelie and his lover or ex lover Bella who is from the Queen's court. Ronan is about to be sentenced to death but Bella steps in to save him. The story was GOOD not great but I will be looking at some fuller length novels by Anya Bast
