Every year Henry and his dad (with help from Mudge, of course) make Henry's mother a funny lunch for Mother's Day. Shopping for their juicy, crunchy surprise is fun, and preparing it is even more fun. But sharing it with Henry's mother is the most fun of all!

From Booklist
PreS-Gr. 2. Henry's gigantic, beloved hound Mudge is part of every scene in the twenty-fourth Ready-to-Read chapter book about their adventures. This time the focus is on Henry's bond with his dad as they plan and prepare a funny-food meal for Mother's Day. "Everyone loves Mudge," and everything is wonderfully idyllic with friends, family, and the small-town community. The best chapter is about shopping for ingredients; Mudge is welcome in the supermarket, where he has a great time sniffing at the shelves and grabbing a toddler's candy. Bracken's clear pen-and-ink and watercolor pictures also show the intriguing funny-food concoctions Dad and Henry whip up--from a Sweet Potato Shoe and a Tomato Snowman to a Pineapple Sofa--which are bound to get kids laughing, reading, and maybe cooking, too. Customer Reviews
my early reader loves this
This is our favorite of the Henry and Mudge books we have read so far. The illustrations are great and it shows a nice spark of creativity from Cynthia Rylant. We have read it many times. The reading level is perfect at level 2. Nice story, nice illustrations, nice challenge, nice humor. Kid-approved, Parent-approved.
Not Just for Mother's Day
Henry's dad helps him cut up the pineapple into a "pineapple sofa" and then make "people" out of fruit to sit on it, all as a surprise for mom on Mother's Day. In the tradition of PLAY WITH YOUR FOOD and APPLE PIGS, kids would love making their own apple people, peach people, plum people and fruity dogs after reading this story. Even Mudge will enjoy helping kids who want to start "cooking up reading."
Would you take your dog to the supermarket?
Henry and his Dad enjoy some bonding time when they take Mudge to the market so they can pick out some special goodies. It's Mothers' Day, and it's time to prepare a special meal for Mom -- a fabulously funny lunch!
Kids will laugh with delight as the special meal with hilariously named courses is prepared by the family, and might just be inspired to prepare a funny lunch of their own.
Henry and Mudge and the Funny Lunch will be read by your child over and over again.
