![]() | Genki 1: An Integrated Course in Elementary Japanese 1 (English and Japanese Edition) by Eri Banno
Buy used from: $28.99 If you are a more structured textbook type the Genki series is a good source. This one is also simple for the most part and there are audio cds to help with it, too. Sold separately, of course.... Still, it's a good series.

![]() | Japanese Kanji Flashcards, Vol. 1 (Third Edition) by Max Hodges
Buy new: $17.12 / Used from: $15.92 You simply can't (or at least you really shouldn't) ignore the kanji. You will really still technically be illiterate in Japanese without learning them. Flash cards are helpful for learning to recognize the different kanji.

![]() | Kanji Dictionary: Kanji Sonomama Rakubiki Jiten
Buy new: $108.99 If you have a DS then this is going to be one of the most affordable electronic dictionaries. The menus are all in Japanese, but even a beginner can play around and figure out some functions. It can recognize kana and kanji drawn on the touch screen and also has some english definitions. I have found it useful.

![]() | My Japanese Coach
Buy new: $29.49 / Used from: $22.99 This is a nice addition but is not a substitute for books!!! Also, if you go for this keep in mind that some of the stroke orders for drawing characters is incorrect! It's still a neat study aid, though.

![]() | Let's Learn Hiragana: First Book of Basic Japanese Writing (Kodansha's Children's Classics) by Yasuko Kosaka Mitamura
Buy new: $9.23 / Used from: $7.47 This is just a wonderful workbook for just learning how to write and practice writing the hiragana and it's partner for katakana is great, too. However, if you go with the Japanese from zero series then you will be taught everything here progressively and it will gradually be integrated as you go through. If you can't wait that long to get the sylabaries down then go for these.
