The Day the Earth Stood StillThe Day the Earth Stood Still

The Classic Sci-Fi Ultimate Collection, Vols. 1 & 2The Classic Sci-Fi Ultimate Collection, Vols. 1 & 2
Buy new: $44.49 / Used from: $44.22
A mixed bag, but a bargain. The essential classic here is THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING MAN, which takes an unusual situation and uses it to ruminate on man's place in the universe. TARANTULA is also quite entertaining about an enlarged arachnid. The other films have their entertaining moments.
The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms / Them! (Double Feature)The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms / Them! (Double Feature)
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $8.99
This double-bill is another terrific bargain. THE BEAST FROM 20,000 FATHOMS was one of the biggest hits of the fifties and ushered in a slew of imitation giant monster movies. The concept was taken from THE LOST WORLD. THEM! is a genuinely unnerving giant ant movie with James Arness, James Whitmore, Edmund Gween, and Joan Weldon.
The Man in the White SuitThe Man in the White Suit
Buy used from: $5.82
Often overlooked, but terrific Ealing comedy featuring a wacky inventor (Alec Guinness) who creates an indestructible suit and the consequences such an invention might have. Sharp satire as well as appealing comedy in this British classic.

Buy new: $17.49 / Used from: $9.56
This is the GODZILLA film of choice, as it includes the longer, even more somber Japanese original as well as the American release, both in excellent transfers and featuring expert commentary. This one notes the tragic toll the giant, radiation-created monster takes on Tokyo. See Japan's nuclear anxieties laid bare in this monster classic.
This Island EarthThis Island Earth
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $6.48
Scientists receive a mysterious catalog and ordering parts and putting the pieces together are brought into contact with an alien race fighting an atomic war and asking for our aid. The colorful scenes are like science fiction magazine covers brought to life.
The Curse of Frankenstein / Taste the Blood of DraculaThe Curse of Frankenstein / Taste the Blood of Dracula

CURSE OF FRANKENSTEIN started off Hammer horror films as well as launching the Cushing Frankenstein series. TASTE THE BLOOD OF DRACULA is the uncut British print of one of the latterday Christopher Lee Draculas.
I Married a Monster From Outer SpaceI Married a Monster From Outer Space
Buy used from: $8.99
Another often overlooked gem, this is an intelligent if paranoid thriller where a bride (Gloria Talbott) discovers that her husband (novelist Tom Tyron) is not the man she thinks he is. Forget the silly title and enjoy as aliens seek to propagate here on Earth.
The Monster That Challenged the World/It! The Terror From Beyond SpaceThe Monster That Challenged the World/It! The Terror From Beyond Space
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $6.59
These are both second-tier, but fun science fiction efforts. THE MONSTER THAT CHALLENGED THE WORLD is set in Salton Sea, California, and features oversized mollusc menaces, while IT! THE TERROR FROM BEYOND SPACE was one of the inspirations for the science fiction classic ALIEN.
Quatermass 2Quatermass 2

This second Quatermass movie, known in the U.S. as ENEMY FROM SPACE, features multiple aliens taking over a new town in England and building a mysterious refinery. Quatermass works his way to the truth of mystery and destroys the menace once and for all, but not before some memorable twists and turns along the way.
The Crimson PirateThe Crimson Pirate
No often thought of as a science fiction film, this delightful send-up of swashbucklers nonetheless qualifies as a scientist keeps creating inventions that had not been created in this time period. Burt Lancaster really turns on the charm (and acrobatics) for this classic.
Cult Camp Classics 1 - Sci-Fi Thrillers (Attack of the 50 Ft. Woman 1958 / Giant Behemoth / Queen of Outer Space)Cult Camp Classics 1 - Sci-Fi Thrillers (Attack of the 50 Ft. Woman 1958 / Giant Behemoth / Queen of Outer Space)

ATTACK OF THE 50 FT. WOMAN is a surrealist masterpiece, as Alison Hayes encounters an alien, grows to gigantic size, and begins literally tearing up the town in search of her two-timing husband Harry. QUEEN is a Cinemascope satiric misfire that postulates a planet ruled by women. BEHEMOTH is a belated BEAST FROM 20,000 FATHOMS imitation featuring work by Willis O'Brien.
Plan 9 From Outer Space/Robot MonsterPlan 9 From Outer Space/Robot Monster
Buy used from: $8.34
Two of the very funniest science fiction no-budget efforts. The infamous PLAN 9 is a very entertaining if wooden-eared drama about an alien plot to resurrect the dead. ROBOT MONSTER is the dream tale of robotic invaders who look like gorillas in diving helmets trying to destroy the last of mankind.
Keep Watching the Skies! American Science Fiction Movies of the Fifties (2 Volumes in 1)Keep Watching the Skies! American Science Fiction Movies of the Fifties (2 Volumes in 1) by Bill Warren
Buy used from: $48.24
Bill Warren's work remains the definitive one thus far surveying the great science fiction films of the '50s (extending the trend into the early '60s as well). Very detailed, fairly personal and personable, this is a highly informative and interesting read for anyone seriously interested in this particular genre.
