Keep Your Donors

The Guide to Better Communications and Stronger Relationships

Most fundraising programs do a stellar job of finding donors, but keepingthem is another matter: most new donors do not return after their first gift. These lost donors represent major lost potential—for an organization's annual giving program, capital campaign efforts, and major and planned gifts.

Keep Your Donors: The Guide to Better Communications and Stronger Relationships, written by fundraising experts Tom Ahern and Simone Joyaux, is a new, winning guide to making disappointing donor retention rates a thing of the past. For the first time in one book, nonprofit professionals will find an in-depth analysis of the two things that matter most to long-term fundraising success: relationship building at all levels of the organization and a thorough look at effective fundraising communications. This practical and provocative book shows nonprofit professionals how to:

  • Master the strategies and tactics that make fundraising communications profitable

  • Create a "culture of philanthropy"

  • Apply hard-core marketing principles to fundraising

  • Understand the most complete discussion of emotional triggers ever written and the science behind them

  • Create plans for relationship-building and donor communications

  • Build a truly "donor-centered" program

  • Write a case for support

  • Measure effectiveness...and much more

This book was written for all fund development professionals who want outstanding results. Those seeking their CFRE credential will find it doubly helpful. The authors based their work in part on the CFRE and AFP job analyses, which document the roles, knowledge, and competencies required for effective fund development.

Enthusiastic, readable, and filled with case studies, Keep Your Donors is the definitive guide to getting new donors—and keeping them—for many years to come.

THE book for board members, fundraisers and executive directors.5
Ahern and Joyaux have put together a book that addresses a hush hush problem -- Why lots of organizations lose their donors. The authors give examples on why it's important to communicate, and ways to communicate in a friendly and appreciated manner. In addition, their writing style is great. AND fun to read! The pages are easy to look at it, with good charts and examples. And, the chapters are short. Each section addresses what we, in the nonprofit world need to do-- Focus on the donor as a person. This will be a classic in the field. A great gift. A great reference. Susan F. Rice, past chair, CFRE International

No one knows their stuff like Simone & Tom5
I had the pleasure of picking up my copy of KEEP YOUR DONORS at Simone and Tom's workshop in Smithfield, RI just yesterday. It's a fantastic reference guide, especially helpful when presenting fundraising principles to my CEO. This volume is especially perfect for me, since my duties include both fundraising and marketing. A day after receiving it, I've used the book twice at work. First, drafting our organizational communication plan, I used the sample from Planned Parenthood Maryland along with Tom's tips. Then, I needed to call to thank a donor for their gift, and I thought, "What do I say after I say thank-you? How could I get a conversation going?" To my delight, the book had the answers. Most highly recommended!

Keep Your Donors - The Guide to Better Communications and Stronger Relationships4
I could not put this book down! Simone and Tom have masterfully written a book that answers the question: "Where did all our donors go?" Read as a textbook, or a quick read for strategic pointers, this book is a winner. A combination of Simone's academic writing style and technical expertise in organizational development and Tom's witty, "say it like it is" style, this book not only encourages thought, understanding, and action regarding donor communications and retention, but it does so in pithy blurbs, quotes, and real-world examples. While the book could be used as a textbook, I have it by my bedside for quick reference through the inserted, bolded questions posed and the specific examples given to create solutions. Read it! Use it! Your donor relations, communications, cultivation and solicitation strategies will never again be the same. Many, many thanks! Dionisia Hanson, Philanthropy Officer, Consultant and Trainer
