Luis Royo's Romeo & Juliet
This is Royo's spin on the Romeo & Juliet story with an asian/gothic theme and the trademark Royo style. There are completed paintings, loose drawings, and text by Royo. The female on the cover is "Moon" and she appears in a variety of outfits and makeup styles throughout and there is some nudity as well. The male counterpart is called "Mars" and they are frmo warring tribes. This is Royo's most ambitious attempt at a full-length narrative and is a wonderful journey. Of course, the artwork is the star here and he is in top form. I really liked the asian characters which adds a new dimension to Royo's women. By attempting to craft a larger tale it has forced Royo to expand his settings, costumes, and people that inhabit the world and was very enjoyable. If you are expecting a book of female pin-ups then Subversive Beauty is the book to get. If you are already a Luis Royo fan then this is an entertaining new book.
Awesome!!
I am a die hard Luis Royo Fan. From his books to posters I have it all!! I have even went so far as to get a tattoo of one of his gorgeous women on my arm so that being said I am definitely going to be biased when it comes to his work. I honestly had no complaints about the art work in this book. Now the story itself could have used some more back ground as well as better pacing. It just seemed to happen rather quickly. The story was just thrown together to showcase the art and it did that quite nicely. Would I recommend this book to any collector of Royo books or other fine art books, heck yea! If your looking more for an actual Graphic Novel with a story to it then this will probably not be for you but you may love it just for the art which is incredible. Some of Royo's best work yet.
