About the Author
Dr. Patrick Coonan is Dean and Professor at the School of Nursing at Adelphi University in Garden City, New York, where he also went to nursing school, as he likes to say, "125 years ago." Throughout his career, Dr. Coonan has held senior patient care management positions at major medical centers in the New York metropolitan area. He was the Chief Nursing Officer in an academic medical center, a health system, and a teaching community hospital and was a fellow in the Johnson & Johnson–Wharton Fellows Program in Management for Nurse Executives at The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Coonan’s academic experience includes administrative and teaching positions at other academic institutions in the New York area, where he has developed technology-enhanced education programs and directed and taught informatics and critical care nursing as well as nursing leadership/management programs. Dr. Coonan received his Ed.D and M.Ed from Columbia University, a Master’s degree in Public Administration/Health Care Administration (MPA) from Long Island University, and a B.S. in Nursing from Adelphi University. He has consulted, written, and presented extensively on nursing management, leadership, nursing education, emergency service and response as well as healthcare management. His educational and consultative work now includes leadership assessment and education, integrating technology into nursing management and educational systems, improving and developing educational delivery models, executive coaching, nursing systems assessment and improvement, and leadership development. After reviewing the many NCLEX-RN review books on the market and recognizing that his faculty wasn’t happy with any of them, he decided to develop a book that tackles the serious subject of nursing and the NCLEX-RN with a lighter touch but is no less effective than more serious, straight-laced study guides. This book is the result.

Best NCLEX-RN prep for the buck!
"NCLEX-RN For Dummies," by Patrick R.Coonan, is not only an insightful navigation tool necessary for preparing to take the NCLEX-RN exam, but also elucidates upon the blueprint and administration of the exam, which I was personally looking for.
The "Dummies" series Tips, Remember, and Example icon, used throughout the book, allow for easy retrieval of information, as well as, provides an overview of how the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) structures and prepares the NCLEX-RN questions.
Mr. Coonan goes behind the scenes of the exam to further explain the what's and whys of how the NCSBN goes about their arrangement of questions. He further orients and familiarizes you to the testing site, provides handy test taking tips (earplugs, breaks, etc.), clarifies some of the basic testing protocols, and calmly interprets the Computer Adaptive Testing (CAT) program, which interprets a test taker's abilities, and therefore determines the level of difficulty and number of questions ask. The book also provides techniques for how to interpret the exam questions. Mr. Coonan clarifies how to go about keying into what's being asked of you, and how to identify the correct answer, especially when each answer option has the possibility of being correct. Reviewing the
basics of Maslow's Hierarchy, the Nursing Process, and Patient Care skills truly enables you to identify the stem of a question vs. the distractors, which go hand-in-hand in a test question. In addition, Mr. Coonan, goes far and beyond by providing a wealth of information for those who desire license-ship in other States (as many people do) and U.S. Territories by providing each State's Board of Nursing contact information. From all of the many other NCLEX review/study
books I've purchased, this book nailed it on the head.
Finally, a Review that;'s Written From the Test Taker's POV!!!
This NCLEX-RN review book by Patrick Coonan, simply put, is written from the test taker's perspective. I have looked through many other review books that I considered "good" until I came across this book; this book gives you more than questions, answers and rationales; it provides tips and strategies to decode NCLEX-style questions; done in a fun way too! Lots of comic relief; don't be surprised, if you find yourself smiling through the pages while mastering your most dreaded topics.
Patrick Coonan's approach carefully tackles the feelings (fear, nervousness) even misconceptions that the test taker has and offers ways of overcoming them. He breaks core concepts down to rules and tips that are easy to remember. In addition, QUESTIONS, ANSWERS, RATIONALES, and CD-ROM are included! Also includes information for registration (fees and requirements), foreign nurses, and more- the entire NCLEX prep package.
This book is also a guide to acing in-school-NCLEX-style exams.
The content is fun and easy to study. Get it, you'll be glad you did!!!
