Hidden Gems: Nintendo Wii Titles you should know about
By an Amazon.com customer
OkamiOkami
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $12.99
Okami is a port of a PS2 game, but that doesn't mean it's warmed over in any way on the Wii. The game is an epic adventure title like Zelda. However, this looks like a Japanese water paintings, and it's stunning to look at. It's also much longer, it's a great value. Finally, the game features a great use of the wii remote, as you use it to paint over the game world.
Zack & Wiki Quest for Barbaros’ TreasureZack & Wiki Quest for Barbaros’ Treasure
Buy new: $67.94 / Used from: $11.45
Zack & Wiki is one of the titles that take advantage of the Wii in ways you can't do on any other system. Every object in the game can be manipulated with the wii remote; tilt the remote and you'll tilt whatever you're holding. If it sounds confusing, then google up the Gametrailers.com video review. One look and you'll just get it; it's a very cool game.
DeBlobDeBlob
Buy new: $18.49 / Used from: $11.50
De Blob is just a very fun game. It's a pretty slick little game with a great pop art style and a really cool, dynamic jazzy soundtrack. It's easy to play too, and fairly lengthy. Not to mention polish. If you enjoyed Mario's adventure and want another quality game, De Blob is a good fit. Really funky and really fun.
Boom BloxBoom Blox
Buy new: $29.99 / Used from: $23.00
This game may sound simple, but it's very well done. Most importantly, it's super fun. You use the wii remote to throw things by clicking on objects and moving the wii remote. What could become very simple never does; it's loaded with tons of modes, for one or many players. It's probably easier to google Gametrailers.com's video review; one look and you'll get it. Hopefully, you'll buy it too.
Rayman Raving Rabbids 2Rayman Raving Rabbids 2
Buy new: $18.49 / Used from: $12.49
Look, there are a ton of shallow, badly produced mini-game compilations on the wii. Everything from Carnival Games to Nintendo's own Mario Party 8. The best of the bunch is the Rayman Raving Rabbids series. These are all waaay better done than anything else on the system, are pretty funny, put the wii to great use and fun for everyone. The second game has more minis for multiple players.
Samba De AmigoSamba De Amigo
Buy new: $11.73 / Used from: $5.80
A great, original music game that uses the wii very well is SEGA's Samba De Amigo. Shake the wii remotes like maracas - simple, but trust me, it's fun. It's another really well produced title that also features new songs in the form of downloadable content; if you put your wii online, it's a nice way to extend the life of the game.
No More HeroesNo More Heroes
Buy new: $34.88 / Used from: $11.25
Okay, not every pick on the list is family friendly. Ubi Soft's No More Heroes is one such game. It's the very definition of japanese hyper violence; it's not really frightening, simply because it's so over-the-top. If you're not phazed by films like Ichi the Killer, Versus or Ricki-Oh, than this game is for you. A really fun, really different game that's totally worth it, but not for everybody.
Super Swing Golf Season 2Super Swing Golf Season 2
Buy new: $37.99 / Used from: $8.49
Since the Wii uses motion controls, some of the best games on the system are golf games. I actually can't think of a bad golf game for the Wii, but my personal vote goes to this. If you don't mind the cartoony style - it's similar to Hot Shots Golf on Playstation - then you'll have a blast. It's not quite 1:1 movement (every movement you make, the character makes), but it's intuitive nonetheless.
Resident Evil: The Umbrella ChroniclesResident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles
Buy new: $19.49 / Used from: $13.75
There's no other controller that can replicate shooting a plastic gun at a screen closer than the wii remote. Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles is the best light gun game on the system right now; just point at the screen and pull the trigger. A surprisingly lengthy campaign mode and solid two player action, as well as a sharp presentation, make this an easy buy for everyone who picks up a remote.
Trauma Center: New BloodTrauma Center: New Blood
Buy new: $22.59 / Used from: $13.99
The Trauma Center games may not look like much, but they're a great use of the wii remote. Basically, you act as a surgeon and the wii remote acts as every one of the tools of you need to save lives. An experience that is unlike anything else on in gamedom - even the handheld versions of the same game on DS. I pick the first one because A) it's cheaper, and B)the second game is a lot harder.
Shaun White Snowboarding Road TripShaun White Snowboarding Road Trip
Buy new: $27.99 / Used from: $17.35
This game just came out, but it's a blast for one simple reason. The Wii Balance Board. This came bundled with the very successful Wii Fit, so there's likely a few families out there with it collecting dust right now. Shaun White is the first game since to use it. It acts as your snowboard; just jump on and start leaning to steer. Really, really fun and extremely well done.
SSX BlurSSX Blur
Buy new: $63.94 / Used from: $5.50
SSX Blur is gorgeous - a great style plus excellent presentation go a long way here. Second, it's loaded with content. Third, it uses the wii controls nicely, as the tilt on the nunchuk is used to steer your rider. It may take awhile to get used to it, but the feeling is one that you can't replicate on the other systems. The game is very cheap now, so it's a perfect pickup for winter.
Tony Hawk's Downhill JamTony Hawk's Downhill Jam
Buy new: $29.98 / Used from: $5.95
The characters may be generic, save for Hawk himself, but the game's very well done regardless of the style. The controls are great; hold the controller sideways and tilt it to the turn. It's simple, but it works. To do a backflip, you flick up on the wii remote (as if you were going to make it do a backflip). The sense of speed is great and the amount of content is pretty heavy. A nice bargain.
Sonic and the Secret RingsSonic and the Secret Rings
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $6.99
Okay, listen to me on this one; play it for a half hour before you judge it. Sonic and the Secret Rings is a really good game, that uses the Wii remote very well, but it's an slow starter. A cardinal sin for a SONIC game. Level him up a bit and the game starts to take off. Loads of missions, a solid single player campaign, a robust multiplayer party mode - the game is loaded with content.
Madden NFL 09 All-PlayMadden NFL 09 All-Play
Buy new: $17.73 / Used from: $13.00
The Wii-exclusive "All Play" brand is great, and Madden is my personal fave outta the bunch. It has every feature of the other versions of Madden, along with Wii specific modes that are perfect for the family. The wii controls shine here; to throw the ball, you hold the button for the receiver and give the remote a flick - a genrle flick to toss a bomb, while a faster one will bullet the throw.
Super Monkey Ball Banana BlitzSuper Monkey Ball Banana Blitz
Buy new: $19.99 / Used from: $6.76
This one's great because EVERYONE can play it - I've never seen anybody NOT have a blast with a Monkey Ball game. You maneuver a monkey in a plastic ball through a stage merely by tilting the wii remote, which rolls the monkey as well as tilts the stage. It's so simple, yet so much fun - the stages are crazy. Banana Blitz is loaded with features. Levels, boss fights, mini-games - it's got it all.
Tomb Raider AnniversaryTomb Raider Anniversary
Buy new: $19.99 / Used from: $10.49
Tomb Raider is an awesome game, and the Wii version is special. The IR pointer on the wii remote acts as your flashlight AND where you aim your gun. The extra content is neat too; during some puzzles, you'll use the wii remote as Lara's hands. You place gears to work machines, spin columns around to match up symbols and unlock doors, etc. An excellent game made better with the move to Wii.
MadWorldMadWorld
Buy new: $19.49 / Used from: $12.50
One of THE titles for any Wii owner over the age of 17. Hyper violent, very stylized, darkly funny, and very, VERY fun. It's a brawler - cut from the same cloth as classics like Streets of Rage - but the execution is closer to something like Tony Hawk, with an emphasis on combos. A very original game with a pretty big learning curve, but it's one of the best games for the Wii.
Resident Evil 4Resident Evil 4
Buy new: $19.49 / Used from: $12.99
RE4 is one of the best designed games from the last 5 years; it's one of the best games ever made, actually. The wii version has all the added content from the PS2 version, classic controller support if you absolutely must have normal controls, and the best controls ever to grace the RE series - a fantastic use of the wii remote's IR pointer. All for 20 bucks; a no-brainer if ever there was one.
Sega Superstars TennisSega Superstars Tennis
Buy new: $15.49 / Used from: $4.99
Along with Golf and Bowling, Wii Sports proved that Tennis is a no-brainer for the Wii's motion controls (when done well). SST is a great example of this; the controls are intuitive, responsive and immersive. The package is attractive as well; colorful, clean and well animated. Lots of content here rounds out things nicely, and it's all for 20 bucks. My pick for Wii Tennis game.
Rune Factory: FrontierRune Factory: Frontier
Buy new: $27.99 / Used from: $24.99
A combo of a casual title and something with far more substance. If you have any interest in something like Animal Crossing, I encourage you to check this out instead. Once a gardening game, RFF now blends that with dungeon crawling and dating elements. Also, it's GORGEOUS. A lot of content, great presentation, and loads of charm - compared to Animal Crossing, this wins every time:)
SNK Arcade Classics Volume 1SNK Arcade Classics Volume 1
Buy new: $19.99 / Used from: $14.17
This features 16 Arcade games from SNK, which means they're really good, AND you probably haven't played any of them:) Absolutely classic gameplay; anyone can pick this up and have a good time. Fantastic range of games too - from action (Metal Slug) to sports (Super Sidekicks), there's something for everyone. A lot of multiplayer games too. A blast from the past, and a great value.
