Not witchcraft
While there may be some magical techniques in the book, it has very little, if anything to do with pagan religions, or witchcraft. Saying a prayer backwards might be good for the movies, but other than being borderline gibberish, borderline teenybopper rebel satanist, is not a good way to truly start. And loving that after he instructs you to do this, gives you a "blessed be".

Mastering Witchcraft
First, I must say, I love this book. It is a true occult classic. It is written in a beautiful style, which, when read, feels as if you are being spoken to as an equal, not spoken down to as a child. (OK...sometimes you ARE spoken down to, but in a teacher to student manner.)
The introduction contains, what I believe, to be a quite erroneous "history" (if it can be called this) of witchcraft. This, I believe, is the only major inaccuracy in the book. Otherwise, it is a bewitching compendium of high Judeo-Christian magic, traditional witchcraft, and European folk sorcery (what M.A. Murray called operative witchcraft), mixed with hints of Gardner's witchcraft religion.
Overall, a great book, if the aforesaid is ignored, and one of the most complete of the "Witchcraft 101" genre.

Great information! A wealth of arcane lore and practice!
You will either love this book or hate it. Many people think this book contains material that can be a little dark, but I don't think it is. I feel this book is very balanced and gives you the information that you need to have to advance in your witchcraft studies. It is good to receive a good perspective from others who practice different forms of witchcraft to really get a feel for what is out their, this book is another approach.

I feel that you can learn a lot from this book .... The last section, The coven and how to form one, is an excellent book that can give you a standnig stone on how to form your own coven if you are thinking about it.

The spells presented in this book are pretty traditional and good information. It is worth the read.
