Alexander Sebastian is an armchair occult enthusiast who lacks much direction in life, but his world is turned upside down when his police detective brother-in-law asks him to help identify some magical symbols scrawled at a ritualistic homicide. He becomes obsessed with the crime and finds himself drawn into the underground modern magick scene. He encounters an odd array of characters- an obese, narcissistic drug-peddling adept, a coke-snorting sex magick dominatrix, a pontificating Freemason with a lisp and many others. But who is responsible for murder? The story is inspired by Newcomb's real-life adventures in actual secret magical societies. This is a look at the true world of magick from the inside.

An excellent Book
In the tradition of Dr. Taverner by Dion Fortune Jason Newcomb has created a work which while about allegedly fictional situations is blatantly based on the authors direct personal experience of Magick and the Occult Community. A quick read and delightful story, the book is one of a Genre I hope will become increasingly common, that of the occult novel written by practicing Magicians.
an exciting story with some good information on magick
Well, I've read most of Jason Newcomb's books, and always find his writing to be creative, approachable, and well stated. I approached his first novel with this background and was not disappointed.
The story is a good one, though some of the characters had me wanting for a little more development. The plot is exciting and the pace builds so it was harder and harder for me to put it aside until one day I just had to sit and finish the rest of it.
I enjoyed how the real world and dream world of our hero blends together in the story. It had me wondering which I was reading a few times. That's a nice twist not seen in most novels. The author also does a great job of educating the reader about the some aspects of magick and at least his view of the workings of some magickal orders. This approach was not pedagogical, however, and did not detract from the story. I just came away feeling like I'd learned something as well as having been thoroughly entertained.
I look forward to the further adventures of Alexander Sebastian, and the further writings of Jason Newcomb.
The Brother of Light and Darkness
Jason Ausgustus Newcomb invites us inside the often zany topsy turvy world of the occult and esoteric Orders and flings us down a rabbithole full of mystery, murder and mayhem. With a knowing smile, he points to myth draped truths that are enshrouded in the haze of drug trains, shady identities and the occasional conjur of a demon or two. The main character, Alexander Sebastian, must find his way out of this ever changing maze, with only hints and glimpses found in sublimial teachings from this plane, the astral plane and the dream plane. With each piece revealed, the reader is enticed to explore further on along the road of self discovery, picking up the esoteric breadcrumbs left by the author for those brave enough to travel down the rabbit trails. I couldn't put it down, and it left me, like every mystery does, wanting to know more. I loved it! I can't wait for the series to unravel more.
