This book tells the fascinating story of how the American continent, described by Lord Bacon as "The New Atlantis," seems to have been set apart for the great experiment of enlightened self-government long before the founding fathers envisioned the rise of the American Republic. Drawing upon often neglected fragments of history, evidence is presented which indicates that the seeds of democracy were planted one thousand years before the beginning of the Christian Era, suggesting that America is not merely a political and industrial entity, but an "assignment of destiny."

From the Publisher
The Philosophical Research Society is a nonprofit organization founded in 1934 for the purpose of assisting thoughtful persons to live more graciously and constructively in a confused and troubled world. The Society is entirely free from educational, political, or ecclesiastical control. Dedicated to an idealistic approach to the solution of human problems, the Society's program stresses the need for the integration of religion, philosophy, and the science of psychology into one system of instruction. The goal of this instruction is to enable the individual to develop a mature philosophy of life, to recognize his proper responsibilities and opportunities, and to understand and appreciate his place in the unfolding universal pattern.
From the Back Cover
Back in print at last, America's place in the essential progress of civilization is emphasized as the story unfolds of how our continent was set aside for the great experiment of enlightened self-government. Drawing upon often neglected fragments of history, evidence is presented which indicates that the seeds of this plan for the founding of America were planted one thousand years before the beginning of the Christian era. Whether discussing the symbolism of the Great Seal of the U.S.S or the mysterious stranger who swayed the signers of the Declaration of Independence, here is a book sure to fascinate. It shows how the brilliant plan of the ancients, concealed from the common view, has survived to the present day and will continue to function until the great work is accomplished.
About the Author
Manly P. Hall was the founder of the Philosophical Research Society. In over seventy-five years of dynamic public activity, he delivered more than 8,000 lectures in the United States and abroad, and authored countless books, essays, and articles. In his lectures and writings, Manly Hall always emphasized the practical aspects of philosophy and religion as they applied to daily living. He restated for modern man those spiritual and ethical doctrines which have given humanity its noblest ideals and most adequate codes of conduct. Believing that philosophy is a working tool to help the individual in building a solid foundation for his dreams and purposes, Manly Hall steadfastly sought recognition of the belief that world civilization can be perfected only when human beings meet on a common ground of intelligence, cooperation, and worthy purpose.

An Unorthodox History of the USA
Manly Hall's book on the hidden destiny of america is a well written and easy to read book of America as the Neoplatonic Utopia. Citing from rare and obscure references you will discover some amazing ideas of a land not born in history until some 500 or more years later. The book starts out in Ancient Egypt with Aknaten, as he declares the first democrat. Hall then states that the Greeks did at one time sail to America and got as far as the Great Lakes. The book also deals largely with prophecies. That of Atlantis, Nastradamus, Lord Bacon, Plato, and other more 'silent' prophets. The one particular aspect of this book that I really enjoyed is that Manly Hall really appreciates books and knowledge. He values them to the utmost degree (see his Great Books on Religion and Esoteric Philosophy). In the course of this literature he states that its not the facts that matter, but rather there is another point of view of history that we may not be aware of. This is just another one and to take it as gosepel truth is to miss the point entirely. Its to keep our imagination rolling and our eyes open that we can see the [personal] utopia. He goes on saying that America is the lost Utopia, or the never found utopia that so many people have been searching for or speculating in theory. Among the famous people that founded this country of whom all of which were involved in Freemasonry or other Secret Occult Societies. Washington, Franklin, Jefferson, and perhaps even Christopher Columbus. It is clear Manly P. Hall knows his materials and the content within them. Highly reccomended for anyone learning about utopias, American history, Manly Hall readers, Freemasonry and Secret Society.
Fantastic
This is a fantastic book. I have been reading Hall and his books are very intelligent and enlightening. I have little doubt that what he writes here is true. I do fear however that this vision of America becoming an enlightened nation has been lost in a cloud of greed. America is now a large corporation where the rest of the world has placed it's stake. Look at our nation, we are now a nation of obese, greedy, lazy, uneducated, and apathetic slobs. We are caught in what I call Celebrity-ism (in wich we idolize and obsess with celeberties and their every move)and drowning in materialism. It is sad really. Maybe one day we will re-awaken to fufill the Secret Destiny of America.
Alas Alas Alas
I regard Manly P. Hall as one of the few writers around who had a profound knowledge of the actual history of mankind, that has been hitherto wrapped in mystery... He was also one of the few who set this knowledge forth laboriously in writing, for the comprehension and benefit of others. This book of his is no different and is about an immensely important topic, the significance of which few are really aware of. Yet upon reading it, it instantly strikes a deep subconscious chord, settling into place as being 100% right. Perceptive people who have been to North America or who have seen and analysed the effect of American influence on the world will know what I mean, and will find a delightful confirmation of this in Hall's work. In this context I agree with the contention of many of the reviewers here namely Justin M Davis, Richard B Wilson and Anthony M Testani, etc. Manly P. Hall has it right when he describes in detail the "secret" philosophy behind the actual nature and intended purpose of America, hidden from the common human mainstream of thought. Yet I will add that be all that as it may, America is now is a shining dream gone rotten, terribly wrong - an exalted purpose felled by malignancy, and is now in the advanced terminal stages from which there can be no turning back. It was THE great hope for mankind, a glorious jewel now flawed and dashed severely - hurtling to its doom which is not far off. If we substitute the equally secret, intriguing and meaningful name of "Babylon the great" for "America" (the USA), then I think the Bible explains it most beautifully:
Rev 18:2 says
"And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird".
There is nothing fanciful at all about what this verse says and how beautifully it explains why America "defaulted" on its destiny: this marvelous nation meant to be the technological, cultural and social icon for the future of all mankind, became overcome with the greed of its riches; and as a result, this nation of the free now supports some of the blackest feudal thuggery and social backwardness in the wretched Third World countries, because that is in its "interests". American women roam freely in tight fitting pants without a second thought, yet here in parts of Pakistan and places like Saudi Arabia, whole feudal governments and social systems are supported in which, if a woman meets a man of her own accord and liking, she is shot or stoned to death in the name of "honour". The stinkingly corrupt, US-supported elites and rulers of places like Pakistan rob the monetary aid the West gives them, and then use that money to buy prime ranches in Texas and the poshest penthouses in New York City. Then when they are out of power and wanted criminals in their own country, they flee to the US to spend the rest of their lives wallowing in luxury and respect. Perhaps that is what the Bible means when it says that "Babylon" has become the (gilded) cage of every unclean and hateful bird. So America has defiled its purpose, to use another Biblical term; and nowadays we can all see the doom and darkness ahead as recession and Islamic terror loom large and oil prices rise continually as "Peak Oil" sets in to deliver the coup de grace to America and its socio-economic system. Alas, this was a Great promise - now rubbed in the mud of its own choosing.
