Underrated!
Shivers is the game to which I measure all other games.
It has spectacular atmosphere. The soundtrack is rather unforgettable, and sometimes pretty darn catchy (damn that elevator!). The graphics are vivid--I haven't found a game with as rich and relevant scenery. Every other game in the genre seems to have a rather drab/realistic setting punctuated with brief glimpses of panoramic prettiness (an ocean, a temple in the distance, etc). Even if the supernatural elements are a bit primitive (c'mon, it was 1996), it's worth glossing over those flaws.
As for plot, the TON of traditional puzzles could easily have been irrelevant, but throwing a crazy professor and museum curator in there makes it plausible-ish that you have to solve a puzzle at every turn. You spend a lot of time clicking around by yourself, but that's how I prefer to play a game like this--there's no stunted conversations, bad lip/dialogue syncs, going away and coming back eight billion times to trigger the proper conversation...and being alone in the museum just gives you more time to freak yourself out and form paranoid theories about the professor and his family. Good times!
Overall, it's a fun little game that, after owning it for over a decade, I've played over and over again as a teen and as an adult. Give it a try and be forgiving on the aforementioned supernatural graphics!
Very Fun
This was the best game I had ever played when it came out in 1996. The graphics aren't the impressive part- it's the gameplay. It's not 3-D; it is a series of pre-rendered images that give an impression of 3-D space.
If you like puzzles and thinking, you will probably love this game as much as I do. It's not an action game that requires reflexes & a good mouse, like many shooters such as Half-Life, Counterstrike, Unreal Tournament, etc. It's all in the mind so you can use a cheap ball mouse and no mouse pad.
Awesome game that runs on practically any computer. I can't seem to find it for sale anywhere, though...
In this case Old is better!
Having started playing adventure, role playing games with the original Zork on a C64.... you will have assumed correctly, that I have played a few as in Hundreds???
Sierra designed and produced some of the best games made and played. Shivers is still number 1 in my book over all the games, from various companies, that I have played.
Shivers is a one CD game that encompasses 30+ detailed and awe inspiring rooms to be explored and investigated. The atmosphere is eerie and at times frightening but nonetheless, more fun for it.
If you have not played it, then do. If you like puzzels, humor (as if anyone could refrain from laughing when they look at Prof Windlenot) but basically just the envolvement in solving the mystery of the Museum while getting to have tons of fun is worth the purchase. An extra bonus to Shivers is that they actually give great information and facts about the artifacts in the museum. It was interesting while playing to learn about other cultures, astrology, science, etc.
The puzzels are challenging with some simplistic and others need clues and wits. Yet, none are unsolveable. The story line is cohesive and reels you in so you want to find out what has happened while saving your game often so you don't die too.
So good luck in avoiding the Ixupi if you decide to enter the realm of SHIVERS.
