The Other SideThe Other Side
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $2.92
(B-) Obscenely cheap debut film actually has a certain amount of low-budget charm and good humor. A rarity.
House of VoicesHouse of Voices
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $3.38
(C) Martyrs director Laugier's first film is a very old-fashioned gothic, but the plot is rather thin and dull, wasting the fine location.
Frost/NixonFrost/Nixon
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $3.00
(B-) Modestly entertaining film, though it fails to prove the purported importance of either the interview of the film itself. Also, Langella sounds NOTHING like Nixon. This is okay, cause pure imitation is usually bad, but many stupid critics have claimed otherwise.
DoubtDoubt
Buy new: $22.49 / Used from: $3.76
(B+) Contra my expectations, this is actually a very good, very interesting film. Hoffman and Davis are fantastic, though the other two somewhat more uneven, particularly the sometimes rather campy Streep.
Omen 3: The Final ConflictOmen 3: The Final Conflict
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $4.10
(C-) Every bit as cheesy and semi-dull as the original, though Neill is quite amusing. On the plus side, that "Damien" song that Iced Earth wrote is rather good. . .
The Rules of the Game - Criterion CollectionThe Rules of the Game - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $30.49 / Used from: $14.17
(B-) Reasonably amusing farce, though it's carried by the trumped up historical importance. Covers many of the same ideas as "Grand Illusion" but in a different, inferior manner.
Beneath the Planet of the ApesBeneath the Planet of the Apes
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $6.45
(C+) Initially campily amusing, though it steadily runs out of steam. The ending is rather surprising, though.
The Lady in WhiteThe Lady in White
Buy new: $10.49 / Used from: $6.17
(B-) Weird "To Kill a Mockingbird"/horror type nostalgia piece. It doesn't entirely come together, but it's generally interesting and fairly different.
The LegacyThe Legacy
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $5.00
(B-) Satanic horror pic is fairly slow, but it looks good, is pretty well-acted and has an enjoyable premise.
Star Trek [Theatrical Release]Star Trek [Theatrical Release]
(B) Suffers from most of the standard flaws of the big-budget summer movie, but it's fast-paced and has generally entertaining performances.
Escape from the Planet of the ApesEscape from the Planet of the Apes
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $4.25
(C) Considering the terrible premise, this turned out a lot better than I might've expected, not that that's saying much.
CreatureCreature
Buy used from: $3.41
(D) The monster is sorta neat, but this is an cheap, boring Alien knockoff.
The Running Man (Special Edition)The Running Man (Special Edition)
Buy new: $14.49 / Used from: $1.98
(B) A definitive bit of 80s action. Gimmicky, but it works.
Fire in the SkyFire in the Sky
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $4.05
(B-) Alien-abduction pic is a bit mundane through much the runtime, but the performances are pretty good and it has a sense of reality rare to these films. Also, the scene on the ship is excellent.
Underworld: Rise of the LycansUnderworld: Rise of the Lycans
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $4.03
(C) Like the other movies in the series, this takes itself too damn seriously for how ridiculous it is. A few decent action scenes, but too silly/talky. The absence of latex-clad Beckinsale hurts. More than I'd expected even, and it was major concern.
Plague TownPlague Town
Buy new: $22.49 / Used from: $4.92
(C+) This legitimately reminds more of raw 70s horror than do most of the recent throwbacks. Unfortunatley, it reminds of the not particularly good efforts.
Conquest of the Planet of the ApesConquest of the Planet of the Apes
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $4.99
(B+) Delightfully ridiculous film manages to work on a camp and straight level simultaneously. Way better than any of the other sequels.
Angels and Demons [Theatrical Release]Angels and Demons [Theatrical Release]
(C+) My only exposure to D. Brown in any form. Plays like a hilariously self-important Indiana Jones film. It's never dull, though the stupid ending leaves a bad taste.
Alone in the DarkAlone in the Dark
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $4.73
(C+) Can't decide if it's a slasher, a satire or a straight thriller. Some of the performances are amusing, but it doesn't really come together.
The Grudge 3The Grudge 3
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $2.89
(C+) There are plenty of worse girl-ghost rehashes and this one displays a little more personality. It still has no particular need to exist, though.
Battle for the Planet of the ApesBattle for the Planet of the Apes
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $3.88
(D+) Slow and lifeless, and the final climax doesn't do much. McDowall is still somewhat amusing, though.
The Andromeda StrainThe Andromeda Strain
Buy new: $11.49 / Used from: $6.26
(B) An interesting relic from the brief period when sci-fi was really self-important. Seems like it should be boring, but proves somehow hypnotic.
Cube ZeroCube Zero
Buy new: $11.49 / Used from: $3.78
(C+) Has some nice gore and the standard Cube fun, but there are some wretched performances, particularly the smug, loathsome female lead and the effete villain-dude. The original relied on freshness, which is obviously gone now.
Terminator: Salvation [Theatrical Release]Terminator: Salvation [Theatrical Release]
(B-) Criticisms regarding the dialogue and characters are accurate but not really relevant. Looks terrific and the action scenes are mostly very good, but with a few missteps. Contra concerns, McG directs things capably, but the sometimes contrived plot hurts. It's still enjoyable.
Carnival of SoulsCarnival of Souls
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $2.89
(C-) Purported remake is mostly just another "Jacob's Ladder" knockoff, not that the various films don't share similarities. Fairly meandering and pointless, though it's hardly the legendarily terrible film some make it out to be.
Captain Kronos - Vampire HunterCaptain Kronos - Vampire Hunter
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $2.87
(B) One of the few later Hammer pics to modernize itself a bit w/o abandoning the old flavor. Quite good.
Eden LogEden Log
Buy new: $22.49 / Used from: $1.94
(C) Like the other French sci-fi films I've seen of late, it looks nice, but is pretentious and with a terribly thin plot. It might've worked if it were an incredibly tight 70 minutes, rather than about 100.
Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (Widescreen Edition)Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $7.49 / Used from: $1.76
(B-) Hadn't seen this since it first came out. It's a capable production, but with no ambition. The only major flaw is the weak sauce TX villain, who is a sorry replacement for the prior antagonists. Also, some of the self-referential humor is actually pretty funny.
The Great Dictator (2 Disc Special Edition)The Great Dictator (2 Disc Special Edition)
Buy used from: $25.97
(B) Strange late Chaplin film is pretty entertaining and somewhat less broad than much older humor. Chaplin big speech is truly bizarre.
Blood TideBlood Tide
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $0.65
(C-) Silly monster movie barely even has a monster in it. Never a good sign.
OutpostOutpost
Buy new: $14.94 / Used from: $2.34
(B-) Military horror featuring space-time bending undead nazi stormtroopers. It's quite professionally done and fairly eerie, but it's a bit too slow.
Catch-22Catch-22
Buy new: $9.49 / Used from: $4.14
(B-) One of my favorite novels, but it always seemed unfilmable. Turns out it is. Lotsa of individual scenes work, but the formless story doesn't fit on the screen, and some of the humor doesn't translate. I'd've expected worse, though.
The CoolerThe Cooler
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $0.01
(B+) Drama about a man hired by the casino to mystically drain good luck from gamblers. Weird mix of romance, drama and thriller elements with excellent performances. It never delivers on the William H. Macy frontal nudity, though. What a tease this film is!
Drag Me to Hell [Theatrical Release]Drag Me to Hell [Theatrical Release]
(A) My expectations were not that high, so I was stunned by how deliriously entertaining this was. Draws upon and expands on the "Evil Dead" films, easily surpassing them. Hard to imagine how it could be better at what it does.
Nothing But the TruthNothing But the Truth
Buy new: $17.49 / Used from: $1.40
(D) Tedious liberal parable inspired by the Plame affair. It's contrived, manipulative, dumbed down etc. The laughable conclusion negates much of what came before, or would if any part of the film worked. Mainstream critics accuse this of being "intelligent," proving the deleterious effects of too much mainstream film viewing.

(B-) Competent but unremarkable HK action. I fear I'm just spoiled by watching the Woo films first.
