From the Author
Barbara’s love of Malamutes began when she bought one as a pet in 1965. Her Windrift dogs are well known and compiled a remarkable record for a small kennel, finishing nineteen Windreft champions, several of which were also ROM producers. Her first litter produced Ch. Windrift’s Leah of Aurora, who was three time BOS as the National Specialty, and Ch. Auora’s Micah of Windrift who was WD at the National. Leah and Ch. Aurora’s Noatak of Windrift produced Barbara’s best-known dog, a multiple Best in Show and Best in Specialty winner, Ch. Windreft’s Nakoah, or "Bowser".

Sherry Wallis began showing, training, and breeding German Shepherd Dogs in 1970. Her interest in Malamutes began with a co-ownership with one of her obedience students. Unfortunately, her husband Robert preferred Shepherds. Eventually, they compromised on Akitas, which they still breed and show. She has bred over twenty Akita champions, including a Register of Merit, and finished championships on German Shepherd Dogs, Malamutes, a Ridgeback, and a Papillon. She has also completed obedience titles on numerous dogs. Sherry worked as a professional trainer, conducting training classes for the Houston YMCA and several training clubs.

Customer Reviews

A comprehensive and enjoyable read for all Malamute owners.5
I have owned, bred and showed Alaskan Malamutes in Australia since 1986. I believe I have had the opportunity to own and read most of the best titles of this breed. A.M. Yesterday & Today is in my opinion the ' cream of any publication ' written about Malamutes. I recommend it to all my puppy buyers....Delecrouix Kennels...Australia.

Superb book on a majestic breed!5
Here it is all in one place: history, care, selection, and activities of Alaskan Malamutes. The breed history not only includes information on founding kennels and influential dogs but also the expeditions on which they were a part of. It doesn't try to sugar coat "the good, the bad and the ugly" of these expeditions. Want to show your Mal? There's a great chapter on this as well, including show grooming information that's valuable to any northern breed owner. The illustrations and photos are excellent, and includes some in color. A must-have for the serious Malamute fancier! Bravo! This is a book I've been waiting for!

Results of using this book5
I have been a malamute lover since childhood, when my dad got us one from a rescue group. Once I had a home appropriate for a dog, I searched for Mamalute breeders, and when I found one in the area I selected a malamute puppy for my family. :) The breeder turned out to be the daughter of Barbara Brooks (Author of this book). She followed this book's principles closely in her Breeding program. The results are amazing. My girl Mal from this breeder is wonderful. She is smart, strong, heathy, and of great temperment. She gave us this book with the puppy, and it has been of great value in caring for our new familly member. Its advice on everything from training, to care to breed tendencies and deep understanding of the breed are so helpful. We will be taking our malamute up Mt. Washington as a pack dog using this book as our guide to perpare for the trip.
