An unusual album by Front 242, the band's two singers were not directly involved in its construction. It is, however, first-rate electronic music with remarkably creative programming and flawless production. It features a female singer (Christine Kowalski), another surprise for longtime Front 242 fans. Her voice is wrathful and distorted on "GenEcide" and "Modern Angel," longing and resentful on "Crushed"--a touching song about loss and isolation. Menacing drum sounds and an enigmatic chant propel the portentous "Serial Killers." Intricate percussion patterns and sweeping synthesizers make for some of Daniel Bressanutti and Patrick Codenys' most memorable programming, particularly on "Animal," and the remixes "Junkdrome" and "Skin (Fur Coat)." --Mark McCleerey

For the finale: perfection
A perfect record. I don't say that about very many albums at all, but with "OFF" 242 wrapped themselves around a remarkably diffuse conceptual framework of songs and song-motifs, charged it with the best instrumentation and production they've ever put on any record, and added a female vocalist who veers from a vicious punky sneer to a breathy romantic sigh without ever grinding gears. Listened to from end to end, it's got an almost narrative sweep, and I think that was precisely the idea. For a band who often went out of their way to avoid explicit interpretations of their material, here's a record that manages to call the most concrete things to mind by being the most abstract. Now that's some kind of miracle, isn't it?
The best album of one of the best electronicas
Front 242 warmed my body on many an otherwise cold night of listening to old house music in clubs in my college town. The oldies, mostly as featured on Front by Front, felt like the DJ acknowledging me on the dance floor amongst the fratboys. And here, we find f242 all grown up. The maturation of the music beyond use of drumbeats and a catchy synth-line is astounding. Many people have spoken about the female vocals, which I do love, but I wanted to talk about Track 5: "Serial Killers Don't Kill Their Girlfriends" -- I'm not sure what it's supposed to be about, but to me, it is an anthem of independent thought and attitude. It moves me and almost forces me to dance. EVERY time I have ever DJ'ed I've played some version of this at some point, if only mixed in as a bridge. I would buy this album just for that track -- but even if it is the high point, so much on the album overall is nearby in both heart and rhythm. (mXr=variably 3-5...some is just good for dancing, but some actually works for mXr, which is unusual for a band often considered 'industrial')
Front 242 at their finest
I think that Front 242 have done something fabulously different with this album and that is by having a Female Vocalist... the diversity and passion that she adds to the music is just awesome... by far their most original work in years... LOVE IT
