![]() | Narrow Stairs by Death Cab for Cutie
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $6.39 After a couple of listens and despite the darker tone, this album has quickly become one of my favorite DCFC CDs and also a front-runner for top album this year. My favorite tracks as the moment are "I Will Possess Your Heart", "Cath..." and "Your New Twin Sized Bed."
![]() | At Mount Zoomer by Wolf Parade
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $3.98 I think the only reason this band isn't bigger than they are is because lead singer Spencer Krug's has a love it or hate it voice. I happen to be of the former opinion. It's hard to narrow it down, but if I had to pick two favorite tracks, they would be "California Dreamer" and "Kissing the Beehive."
![]() | Arm's Way by Islands
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $3.50 One part The Strokes, one part Arcade Fire, Islands is Canada's latest brilliant musical export. This album is full of catchy, well composed tunes that easily endure repeated listens. My favorite songs include "Creeper" and "In the Rushes".
![]() | In Rainbows by Radiohead
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $4.10 Despite all the hoopla about how this album was released (pay what you want download), the best part is the music. From the drum machine-like beats of "15 Step" to the piano driven "Videotape", this CD is one of Radiohead's best efforts yet.
![]() | Alopecia by Why?
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $9.00 Jewish indie rock hip-hop at its best (though possibly only)! Why?'s latest CD is an interesting mix of genres that I can't seem to stop listening to, melding these sounds into a superb cohesive whole. Give a listen to "The Hollows."
![]() | Fleet Foxes by Fleet Foxes
Buy new: $11.49 / Used from: $8.91 Hailing from Seattle, Fleet Foxes self titled debut is a dreamy, silky-smooth, folk-rock phenomenon. Don't let the subdued nature of their music fool you, these guys know how to rock. I can't stop listening to "White Winter Hymnal" and "Heard Them Stirring".
![]() | A Hundred Million Suns by Snow Patrol
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $4.50 Another strong, though perhaps slightly unoriginal, outing by Snow Patrol. If you like their previous albums, then you should like this as well. SP sticks to the same formula without delivering anything surprising. Best track is "If There's A Rocket Tie Me To It".
![]() | Med Sud I Eyrum Vid Spilum Endalaust by Sigur Ros
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $4.50 Sigur Rós is my favorite band, but this album comes up a bit short. Eschewing their sweeping, orchestral sound for a more intimate and acoustic feel, Med Sud... lacks the majesty of their prior releases. I'm enjoying the album more on subsequent plays, but it isn't their best work. Listen to "Ára bátur" and "Fljótavík".
![]() | Third by Portishead
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $5.00 After a brief hiatus, Portishead roars back with their best album yet. Eleven years since their last studio album, Portishead doesn't miss a beat. Personal favorites are "The Rip" and "We Carry On."
![]() | Consolers Of The Lonely
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $7.36 Coming out of nowhere, this album surprised me in more than just its release. I was instantly sucked in by the dirty, White Stripes-ish sound. What sets it apart is the inclusion of more members, resulting in a more richly layered sound. A great rock album from start to finish, I highly recommend this CD (or vinyl).
![]() | Jukebox - Deluxe Edition by Cat Power
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $9.97 Chan Marshall's soothing crooning once again delivers a pleasure-trip for the ears. While I enjoyed her covers, the best material is her own "Metal Heart," a reworking of an older song. Also totally worth your time is the cover of Bob Dylan's "I Believe In You." If you like her last album, The Greatest, then this one is sure to please.
![]() | Me and Armini by Emiliana Torrini
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $6.79 More sonically adventurous than her last album, Me and Armini met my expectations. Torrini's soothing vocals are amazing as always and I loved the songs "Jungle Drum" (which was completely new for her musically) and "Gun".
![]() | Viva La Vida by Coldplay
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $4.86 I had heard rave reviews that this album is Coldplay's return to rocking form. They exaggerate. While not a bad album, I feel like it lacks the energy of their previous albums (yes that even includes X&Y). There are good songs, but Chris Martin sounds a bit lethargic. Don't get me wrong; I liked the CD, but it could have been better. Give "42" and "Viva La Vida" a whirl.
![]() | Vampire Weekend by Vampire Weekend
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $7.75 What happens when you mix afro-beats with fiddling? You have to give this album a listen to find out. An almost completely new sound (OK, old sounds, new amalgamation), Vampire Weekend has a lot of promise. Give "M79" and "Campus" a spin. You just might find yourself hopelessly addicted.
![]() | Distortion by Magnetic Fields
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $2.86 |
![]() | Perfect Symmetry [2 CD Deluxe Edition] by Keane
Buy new: $21.98 / Used from: $5.60 Coming from Keane, this was an extremely disappointing album. They seem to have turned in their signature songwriting and piano driven sound for 1980's electronic keyboards/sound effects and generic songs. The couple of standouts are "Perfect Symmetry," "Love is the End," and "The Lovers are Losing".
![]() | Day & Age by The Killers
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $3.41 Another mediocre release from a band I expected more from. While there are some good songs, Hot Fuss had more fun and Sam's Town felt more musically mature. Not that's this is bad, it's just...meh. I'd still recommend giving this a spin, but try to keep your expectations in check so you're not let down like me. Best songs are "Human" and "Neon Tiger".
![]() | Weezer (Red Album) [Deluxe] by Weezer
Buy new: $15.99 / Used from: $8.40 Yet another great band delivering a sub-par record. Disappointment mus be in vogue this year. Weezer's songs seem mildly egotistical and they are lacking the charming energy of previous albums. Nonetheless, "Pork and Beans" is a great song and there are quite a few others that are decent too.
![]() | Accelerate by R.E.M.
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $1.97 After a couple of lackluster albums, REM returns to their rock roots with Accelerate, by far their best album in years. If you had lost faith in REM, then tracks like "Supernatural Superserious" and "Houston" should restore them back to your graces.
![]() | A Mad and Faithful Telling by DeVotchKa
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $7.37 Continuing to infuse an eastern European flavour into their gypsy rock, DeVotcKa brings yet another very distinct album to the "Little Miss Sunshine" loving masses. All I can say is if you liked their past work, you should like this, as it is more of the same. The only disappointment is that Urata's vocals don't soar quite like they did in the past.
