![]() | The Bends by Radiohead
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $2.94 The best alternative rock album ever made. Every facet of this album is perfect in every conceivable way, from song-writing, production, performance and emotional resonance. Covers all emotional territory, from fear, depression and sorrow, to happiness, glory and joy. Produced by Nigel Godrich (as has every other Radiohead album), he is their unofficial fifth member.
![]() | OK Computer by Radiohead
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $0.99 Brilliant. Another very eclectic album. Some of the best singing I've ever heard. My third favorite RH is "Hail to the Thief," which does a great job of fusing their electronic and rock sides. Interesting fact: "KId A" and "Amnesiac" were written and recorded at the same time and were originally meant to be a double album.
![]() | Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness by Smashing Pumpkins
Buy new: $20.99 / Used from: $2.50 Billy Corgan wrote something like 75 songs for this album, many of which were released in the box set "The Aeroplane Flies High." Taken as companion pieces, they are THE penultimate alternative rock records of the 90s. Fury, passion, despair, happiness, love, and hate, these albums cover it all, from heavy metal to classical.
![]() | Siamese Dream by Smashing Pumpkins
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $2.46 The most amazing thing about this album is its TONE. There are songs on this album that have more than 100 recorded guitar overdubs. That is why there is, and will never be, another record that sounds like this. The guitar tone is so fat, so bruising, so creamy, and so smooth, it can only be described as perfect. The album is an absolute classic.
![]() | The Fragile by Nine Inch Nails
Buy new: $22.99 / Used from: $1.98 Staggering. Covers a lot of emotional and musical ground. Some of the best songs Reznor has ever written appear on this album. This is musically his finest album, but the scathing "Downward Spiral" and "Pretty Hate Machine" are excellent and must have records as well.
![]() | Soup by Blind Melon
Buy new: $11.94 / Used from: $1.81 Despite their smash single "No Rain" off their self-titled debut, "Soup" is the album for which they are best remembered. Yet another brilliant band who's career ended tragically with the overdose death of singer Shannon Hoon. This is one of the most original, soulful and perfect rock records in existence. I guarantee you will love this album.
![]() | Aenima by Tool
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $5.72 Absolutely essential. Outstanding musicianship. This album rocks like few others do. Intelligent metal. Also amazing are "Undertow" and "Lateralus". Three of the greatest rock/metal albums ever made, courtesy of one prodigious band.
![]() | f#a# (infinity symbol) by Godspeed You Black Emperor!
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $7.60 One of the most groundbreaking records of all time. Spoken word samples set over some of the most harrowing, gorgeous and intense music ever made. This is a nine piece band (two guitarists, two violinist, two cellists, an acoustic bassist and two drummers). EPIC. Some of the samples are a bit obnoxious, but the music is so masterful you won't even care.
![]() | Slow Riot for New Zero Kanada by Godspeed You Black Emperor!
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $5.99 My second favorite album from them. "Moya" is one of the most amazing songs of all time. Also get their double LP "Lift Yr SKinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven" and prepare to be absolutely floored. Hundreds of imitators have followed in this band's footsteps. They are credited with creating the "Post-Rock" genre though the band despised that label.
![]() | Happy Songs for Happy People by Mogwai
Buy used from: $5.87 Instrumental music that ranges from pretty sonic ambience to head-banging rock explosions. Every album in the band's repetoir is excellent, each for its own unique reasons. This band continues to pave the way for instrumental music. You must also get "Mr. Beast." and "Young Team" and "Rock Action."
![]() | Come on Die Young by Mogwai
Buy used from: $2.97 Dark, moody, amazing. The term "wall of sound" will have a new meaning for you. If you can find a copy of the out-of-print "Ep+2", buy it at any cost. The reworked version of that album (Ep+6) also contains the "For Satin" ep, which is inexplicably placed BEFORE the original EP, which is a SCRAMBLED version, completely destroying the flow and vibe of the original.
![]() | Ágætis Byrjun by Sigur Rós
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $4.77 Otherworldly, triumphant, majestic, glorious, towering, essential. How can you not already own this album?!
![]() | ( ) by Sigur Rós
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $4.33 Some of the most beautiful songs of all time (1,3,4 and 8). A slow monolith of an album. Get "Takk" and "Med Sud I Eyrum Vid Spilum Endalaust" for equally as beautiful, but more energetic and rocking Sigur Ros. One of the most beautiful and original bands of all time.
![]() | The Earth Is Not a Cold Dead Place by Explosions in the Sky
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $9.37 Their finest. Another instrumental band Influenced heavily by Mogwai and Godspeed, but ithis album is so f***ing amazing and powerful it will blow your mind. Their other material, while good, doesn't even compare to this. They are an amazing live band though.
![]() | Philophobia by Arab Strap
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $2.74 Very very hard to describe. EXTREMELY beautiful, sad minor-key compositions accompanied with drum machines and narrations of debauchery. Prepare to laugh, damn near cry, and zone out to these incredible albums: "The Red Thread," "Monday at the Hug & Pint" and "The Last Romance." I dare you to hear "Screaming in the Trees" and not cry.
![]() | Trust by Low
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $5.00 Haunting, melodic, slow, gorgeous. This band, around since the early 90's, gets better and better with each subsequent release. Listen to "Curtian Hits the Cast" for the epitome of musical minimalism. "Things We Lost in the Fire" and "The Great Destroyer" have some ridiculously amazing music. Singer has my favorite voice of all time.
![]() | Winter Hymn Country Hymn Secret Hymn by Do Make Say Think
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $10.29 Amazing, instrumental jazz rock band. All of their material is recorded as a live band. EPIC, horns strings guitars, two drummers. Extremely creative and intelligent. Beautiful and moving, you have never anything like this album.
![]() | Other Truths by Do Make Say Think
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $9.98 Their newest release. Absolutely floored me the first time I heard it, I was nearly weeping. You must also get "You, You're a History in Rust" which has two of my favorite songs of all time ("Bound to Be That Way" and "A Tender History in Rust") and their first album, the post rock/jazz masterpiece "Goodbye Enemy Starship, The Landlord is Dead."
![]() | Spirit of Eden by Talk Talk
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $5.50 The most beautiful, spiritual, gorgeous album you have never heard. This album came out in 89, and there has not been anything else that has sounded like it to this day. Considered by some critics to be among the best albums of all time. The band went from a new-wave 80s group to a spiritual entity in just one album.
![]() | Blood Money by Tom Waits
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $4.40 One of the best song-writers alive. Amazing, multi-instrumentation. He barks, growls, hisses, screams and croons his into your head and heart. Also get "Frank's Wild Years," and "Real Gone."
![]() | Orphans [Fold-out Digipak with 24-page booklet] by Tom Waits
Buy new: $27.47 / Used from: $9.99 Triple LP with three albums containing three different styles of Waits songcraft. "Bastards, Brawlers and Bawlers" the latter of which has some of the best ballads ever written. For more ballady stuff, get "Alice." The man has more than twenty albums, so don't tell me you don't like his voice, because he sings in a different voice on every song and every album. There's something for everyone.
![]() | Washing Machine by Sonic Youth
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $3.00 My personal favorite SY album, and a good place to start if you haven't heard much of their stuff. Avant Garde noise-rock at its finest. The great thing about SY is how unpolished, stripped down, and raw they are. The result is true honesty and artistic expression. Awesome guitar work, experimental, quirky, atonal, furious, and sublime.
![]() | Murray Street by Sonic Youth
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $2.98 A calmer, gentler side of Sonic Youth. Mature, beautiful, minimallistic. One of my all-time favorite albums. Other recent SY gems include "Sonic Nurse" and "Rather Ripped" both of which do a great job integrating new and old school SY aesthetics. Other great albums: "Sister," "Daydream Nation," "Goo" and "Dirty."
![]() | Lonesome Crowded West by Modest Mouse
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $7.09 What a phenomenal album. Brilliant musicianship and lyrics (hilarious, heartbreaking, ridiculously spot-on). Generally regarded to be their masterpiece. Also essential albums in their catalogue are "This is a Long Drive For Someone With Nothing to Think About" and "The Moon and Antarctica." One of the most important contemporary bands around.
![]() | The Soft Bulletin by The Flaming Lips
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $2.95 Wow. Just wow. Their finest. Beautiful, sophisticated, intelligent, multi-layered. Only comparison is Radiohead, but the Lips are an entirely different machine. Their newest, "Embryonic" is considered by many to be their best since this one, and I agree: electro-fusion, controlled chaos. Beauty in insanity. Nothing else in the world that sounds like it.
![]() | The Hour of Bewilderbeast by Badly Drawn Boy
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $0.74 So beautiful. Some of the best alternative rock/pop ever made. Utilizing strings, brass, piano, acoustic and electric guitar, this album just has it all. Rough around the edges and has some filler (little grainy four-track experimentations) but is essential. They also did the "About a Boy" soundtrack, which is exquisite.
![]() | Ladies & Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space by Spiritualized
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $1.02 Beautiful orchestral blues-rock. Like your music layered and atmospheric? This band utilizes strings, horns and even gospel choirs. Be sure to hear "Lazer Guided Melodies" and "Let It Come Down" for some of the most amazing and soaring music you'll ever hear. If you're smart, you'll just buy "Spiritualized: The Complete Works 1 & 2"
![]() | The Boatman's Call by Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds
Buy used from: $5.99 Nick Cave. DARK. Beautiful. Somewhat comparable to Tom Waits. Extremely eclectic musician. Get "Murder Ballads" and "From Her to Eternity" as well. Then get everything else he has released. Not a big fan of his newest "Dig Lazarus Dig." My only beef with him is he often uses Biblical material as a crutch for his songwriting.
![]() | Our Endless Numbered Days by Iron & Wine
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $8.66 Just the most beautiful "folk" album of all time. Also get "Creek Drank the Cradle" the "Woman King" Ep and the "Sea and Rythm" Ep. Those are his best releases.
![]() | How It Ends by DeVotchKa
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $7.74 Beautiful and emotional melding of eastern and western music. Check out their debut "Supermellodrama" for more of their rock side, and "Una Volta" for more amazing music. One of the best bands playing today.
![]() | It's a Wonderful Life by Sparklehorse
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $2.89 Perfect. Just perfect. The only dissapointment on the album is actually in collaboration with Tom Waits (hard to believe I know) Every song is excellent and flows right into the other. One of the prettiest records ever. Also check out "Vivadixiesubmarinetransmissionplot" which is a completely amazing album.
![]() | Doolittle by Pixies
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $4.00 They made modern rock music in the late 80's that put their 90s contemporaries to shame. Excellent, quirky, wonderful. It was a tough call whether to put this one or "BOSSANOVA" on....they are both essential. Can't express my love for this band adequately. Also get "Surfer Rosa."
![]() | The Ugly Organ by Cursive
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $1.21 Awesome rock record featuring some excellent cello work. Explosive and Intelligent. A great concept album, and Cursive's best by far. More great albums by this band: "Cursive's Domestica," "The Difference Between Houses and Homes" and "Happy Hollow."
![]() | Rage Against the Machine by Rage Against the Machine
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $1.88 One of the greatest rock albums of all time. Virtually impossible to listen to without getting pumped. Also classic are "Evil Empire" and "Battle of Los Angeles."
![]() | Grace by Jeff Buckley
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $13.00 One of the best albums of the 90's from what some would say was its best singer. Listen to his falsetto on "mojo pin," "grace" and of course "hallelujah."
![]() | Lifted or The Story Is in the Soil, Keep Your Ear to the Ground by Bright Eyes
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $2.39 A brilliant young songwriter. This album has proven to be his best. Contemporary folk rock at its finest. Also excellent is his second LP "Fevers & Mirrors." and then "I'm Wide Awake Its Morning" Comparable to Wilco, yet very different.
![]() | Homogenic by Björk
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $0.94 Experimental, beautiful, unique, original. Every time I hear "The Bachelorette" I get goosebumps. DAMN this woman can sing.
![]() | Emotionalism by The Avett Brothers
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $8.88 Pretty much THE BEST contemporary songwriters around, backed by some of the most beautiful acoustic and folk music today. Also get "Mignonette" and "Four Thieves Gone." Awesome singing, heartfelt and moving. Can't reccommend this band and this album highly enough. Can bring tears to my eyes with every listen.
![]() | Before These Crowded Streets by Dave Matthews Band
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $1.40 Come on. Also "Crash" and "Under The Table and Dreaming." Their newer stuff is pretty mediocre adult/alternative, toothless stuff. But their newest, "Big WHiskey and the Gru Grux King" about the death of their saxophone player is outstanding.
![]() | Shootenanny! by Eels
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $2.70 Perfect contemporary pop/rock. The lyrics are honest, simple and profound. The highs are heavenly and the lows are heartbreaking. The music is moving, textured, brilliant. Also essential is "Souljacker." "Daisies of the Galaxy" has some of their best songs but isn't a great album. Get "Blinking Lights & Other Revelations" and "Electro Shock Blues."
