The Better of 2009 Albums
By an Amazon.com customer
Wolfgang Amadeus PhoenixWolfgang Amadeus Phoenix by Phoenix
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $6.50
This was another album that I didn't have high expectations for and left an impression on me. It's a really solid listen of solid pop-ish tunes that will become infectious. Try: "1901"
It's Blitz! It's Blitz! by Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $8.94
This album has been a big surprise for me. I was already a pretty solid fan of this group, and the new direction taken on this album came as a welcome, new sound. Although the old, more rocking Yeah Yeah Yeahs' tracks are fewer and far between, the song crafting on this disc is a interesting new dynamic to this group. Try: "Hysteric"
Other TruthsOther Truths by Do Make Say Think
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $10.14
If you do not know Do Make Say Think, I highly recommend familiarizing yourself with them. DMST produces some of the best, and most original post-rock sounds around. On this album they commit to longer, more building tracks. They absolutely do not disappoint. Try: "Say"
CluesClues by Clues
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $10.48
Debut album featuring ex-Unicorns' frontman Alden Penner. Clues doesn't necessarily sound really similar to the Unicorns, but it is certainly in the same ballpark. This album packs a fresh, weird rock / pop sound that improves with multiple listens. Try: "Remember Severed Head"
Only Built 4 Cuban Linx, Pt. 2Only Built 4 Cuban Linx, Pt. 2 by Raekwon
Buy new: $15.99 / Used from: $11.21
This long awaited Raekwon album does not disappoint. This is some of the post solo work by any of the Wu-Tang, which is saying a lot. While I am no hip-hop expert, this is the best hip-hop record of the year so far. Forget the new Jay-Z and get this one. Try: "Surgical Gloves"
Living ThingLiving Thing by Peter Bjorn & John
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $3.73
The latest from Peter Bjorn and John is, in many ways, a departure from 'Writer's Block.' This album is a bit more experimental in the direction of synth, yet minimalist pop. This album doesn't seem to be very well received thus far, but it is great to see the direction that they are going currently. Try: "Stay This Way"
Central MarketCentral Market by Tyondai Braxton
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $5.99
Tyondai Braxton, a central member of Battles, produces a stunningly original and inventive album that can't help but produces a double-take reaction. It is composed greatly, provides a range of images, and is an album that you must give a listen to, in my humble opinion. Try: "The Duck and the Butcher"
Merriweather Post PavilionMerriweather Post Pavilion by Animal Collective
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $10.49
This album has been hyped and hyped, but it truly does deliver (at least mostly). The wonderfully soothing and grooving tracks of this disc mesh together very nicely and include some extremely catchy hooks. Try: "Brother Sport"
EmbryonicEmbryonic by The Flaming Lips
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $6.99
I really didn't see this album coming. After 'At War with the Mystics' I thought that perhaps the Flaming Lips were on the creative decline. Much to my enjoyment, I was wrong. This is almost a throwback to their earlier sound, but more distorted...if that makes sense. Try: "Watching the Planets"
Childish ProdigyChildish Prodigy by Kurt Vile
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $8.10
The latest album, and second this year, from Kurt Vile is the one that I have been waiting for him to release. This feels more like a proper album and is an extremely consistent listen from beginning to end, which was not the case with some of his previous releases. Give this wonderful DIY-style rock a try. Try: "Monkey"
Noble BeastNoble Beast by Andrew Bird
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $7.50
Andrew Bird's newest keeps a lot of previous elements of his work, while simplifying his style to provide some of the more well-crafted songs of his yet. Try: "Not a Robot, But a Ghost"
Beacons Of AncestorshipBeacons Of Ancestorship by Tortoise
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $8.33
The latest from Tortoise is a somewhat significant shift in their sound. They maintain the experimental and shifting time signatures, while pumping up the volume relative to 'It's All Around You'. However, they still maintain some of those ambient qualities. Just listen to this one. Try: "High Class Slim Came Floatin' In"
Where The Wild Things Are Original Motion Picture Soundtrack: Original Songs By Karen O And The KidsWhere The Wild Things Are Original Motion Picture Soundtrack: Original Songs By Karen O And The Kids
Buy new: $11.49 / Used from: $8.10
This is a charming soundtrack from Karen O and her extensive list of featured musicians. This is quite different from the YYY's material, but it makes for one pleasant listen. I haven't seen the film yet, but it seems like it would be ideal for it. Try: "Worried Shoes"
Prospekt's MarchProspekt's March by Coldplay
Buy used from: $7.11
Although only an EP, the quality on this disc is something I didn't see coming. All of the original songs on this EP could have very easily made the 'Viva la Vida' album. Try: "Now My Feet Won't Touch the Ground"
HorehoundHorehound by The Dead Weather
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $8.24
Honestly, I expected this album to be sort of a lame, super-group sort of thing. After giving it a listen, I was pleasantly surprised that it has a nice, delta, grimy rock feel to it. While it may not be the most revolutionary album, it is certainly a good listen. Try: "Hang You From the Heavens"
VeckatimestVeckatimest by Grizzly Bear
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $10.72
Tons has already been written about this one. It's certainly a good listen. Try: "Two Weeks"
Phrazes For The YoungPhrazes For The Young by Julian Casablancas
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $6.66
Debut album from the former frontman of the Strokes can be a bit hit or miss. The first few songs are quite weak, but once you get past that, it's a great listen of this artist going in a more electronic direction. Try: "Ludlow St."
No One's First, and You're NextNo One's First, and You're Next by Modest Mouse
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $5.87
After Modest Mouse's most recent album, I was about to abandon any hope for future quality releases. However, this disc certainly gets rid of that thought. This is somewhat of a 'return to form' effort, in my opinion. Try: "Autumn Beds"
God Is Saying This To You?God Is Saying This To You?
Buy new: $9.99
Kurt Vile's follow up to 2008's Constant Hitmaker leans more in the direction of low-fi acoustic tunes than its predecessor. No one particular gem, like "Freeway," but it is perhaps a more solid listen all the way through. Try: "My Sympathy"
Here We Go MagicHere We Go Magic by Here We Go Magic
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $7.89
Luke Temple's latest project / vessel, is a step toward the pop path. This album is more solid than his last solo album, in my opinion, and this project seems like a move in the right direction. Try: "Tunnelvision"
Riceboy SleepsRiceboy Sleeps by Jonsi & Alex
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $11.83
This is a great debut effort from this duo featuring Jonsi Birgisson of Sigur Ros. It delivers what one might expect from a Sigur Ros related project, which is a dreamy, ambient listen. While this might not be the best thing to put in your car's CD player, it is a great and relaxing experience. Try: "Boy 1904"
Kiss/KickKiss/Kick by Broken Spindles
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $1.78
The Faint bassist Joel Peterson's anticipated follow up (at least by me) to 2005's wonderful "Inside/Absent." This album is more of a departure from the electronic dominated elements of earlier Broken Spindles. More live, raw percussion is found on this disc, while still maintaining the type of sound that Joel Peterson has established with Broken Spindles. Try: "We All Want To Fit In"
For All I CareFor All I Care by The Bad Plus
Buy new: $18.98 / Used from: $5.87
The newest Bad Plus album is a departure in that vocals are features for the first time with the recruitment of Wendy Lewis. I prefer the instrumental Bad Plus albums, but this is certainly a worthy addition to their solid catalog. Try: "Comfortably Numb"
Yours Truly, The CommuterYours Truly, The Commuter by Jason Lytle
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $3.98
This album is the debut from Jason Lytle formerly of Grandaddy. The album is about what I expected stylistically, but it is a rather solid listen of sort of spacey / pop songs. Try: "Rollin' Home Alone"
Around the WellAround the Well by Iron & Wine
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $9.73
This collection of mostly B-sides from Iron & Wine stands alone surprisingly well. As one would imagine, the sound on this album spans the rather sparse sound of earlier albums to the full-band sound of the most recent Iron & Wine album. Try: "Dearest Foresaken"
UuVvWwZUuVvWwZ by UuVvWwZ
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $1.48
Pronounced 'Double-U, Double-V, Double W, Z," this debut from Lincoln's own is a promising effort. The style here is sort of an indie spastic rock that is pretty accessible. Try: "Green Starred Sleeve"
The Blueprint 3 [Explicit]The Blueprint 3 [Explicit] by Jay-Z
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $6.54
I am not much of a Jay-Z fan, but this was a pretty good listen. Try: "Death of Auto-Tune"
Wet FistWet Fist by The Show Is the Rainbow
Buy new: $12.98 / Used from: $0.83
The latest from Lincoln, NE based one-man machine Darren Keen adds a new dynamic to his already hefty catalog. While previous efforts seem to had sections that lagged a bit at times, this disc is rather solid and displays some of his best tracks thus far in his career. Try: "Who He Says He Is"
Mama, I'm SwollenMama, I'm Swollen by Cursive
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $5.89
Cursive's follow up to the extremely mediocre "Happy Hollow" is certainly a step up. While this album is certainly worth a listen and shows Cursive in much better form, it seems to me that their creative peak is behind them. Try: "From the Hips"
Why There Are MountainsWhy There Are Mountains by Cymbals Eat Guitars
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $4.00
This seems to be this year's album out of left-field so far. Although I feel it has gained a bit of an inflated reputation, it is still a very solid listen. Try: "What Dogs See"
BromstBromst by Dan Deacon
Buy new: $12.98 / Used from: $9.44
A very similar style to 'Spiderman of the Rings,' Deacon's newest doesn't disappoint and keeps the ridiculous layers of electronic sounds coming.
I Think We're Gonna Need a Bigger BoatI Think We're Gonna Need a Bigger Boat by Brighton Port Authority
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $2.89
A very interesting project in which a different vocalist guests on each song. Styles tend to range from song to song, which makes for an enjoyable listen. Try: "Toe Jam"
