Illustrator Finally Revealed
My good experience with Chris Botello's other Revealed series title for advanced Photoshop work led me to pick up his Adobe Illustrator CS3 Revealed. My other forays into Illustrator instruction have been decidedly less positive, so I hoped this guide would leave me finally able to make use of all of Illustrator's capabilities.
The Revealed format is easy to follow with instructions on the outside quarter of the page and clear instructional graphics in the inner three-quarters. The instructions for each lesson build on previous lessons and chapters, starting with detailed instructions and transitioning to the simply being told to perform the function. This really helped make basic functions in Illustrator second nature. Each chapter was made up of several lessons (some of which were fairly long in themselves) and ended with a set of project builders. The project builders began with simple review, moved on to a design project (limited directions for creating a design from scratch), and ended finally with a group project (creating a design from scratch without any instruction). By the end of each chapter, I felt like I had a firm understanding of the concepts and could put them to use even without step-by-step instruction.
In order to be truly successful with Illustrator, you need to be able to draw free hand. My skills in this department are sadly lacking. My only complaint with the book was really a complaint about myself. In the lessons where drawing curves and lines were necessary, they provided guide points. In real life, there are no guide points. That said, I was able to walk away with some great technique for creating text graphic and creating shapes and designs. My success with the Revealed series will definitely make it a first choice for learning Adobe Creative Suite programs in the future.
A decent teaching tool but could really be better...
This book was required for my online Illustrator class. I'm a non-traditional student with a graduate degree and I'm taking this training seriously. I find that the lessons are not always easy to follow, and a few of the examples are either wrong or could have been edited better to avoid some serious confusion. Regardless, this type of book is probably very difficult to write...but considering it's directly from Adobe, I'm a little disappointed. On the brighter side, I'm learning a great deal about the software, and I'm hopefully learning everything I need to know (I just have to try and figure a few things out on my own when the book doesn't explain it).
Awesome!!!!
I received the book and it was in perfect condition and it even has a cd inside.
Been waiting a long time to purchase this item, but the retail cost was so
expensive that I never bothered. Purchased it at Amazon.com at a lower cost,
got the book, the data cd that came with it and now I can learn to use it on my own,
learn on my own time. Thank you oh so much.
