Walking with the Wind: A Memoir of the MovementWalking with the Wind: A Memoir of the Movement by John Lewis
Buy new: $10.88 / Used from: $0.01
May be my favorite book. A motivational memoir about a lesser known heroes of the civil rights movement – Congressman John Lewis. The great speaker Martin Luther King got most of the kudos but the brave (and they were truly brave) foot soldiers on the ground were the real heroes, enduring constant assaults, beatings, imprisonment. A brilliant book which should be a must read for young and old.

I have been lucky enough to be referenced as "Mark Twain with a brogue," - something that got me interested in the works of this genius. A wonderful, wonderful book full of humor, insight, kindness and a bellyful of laughs by THE first great motivational speaker and humorist and one who paved the way for all motivational speakers (Chicago or not). Available through specialist booksellers.
SHEIFGAB the World: 8 Building Blocks to Successful Job Transition (Volume 1)SHEIFGAB the World: 8 Building Blocks to Successful Job Transition (Volume 1) by Conor Cunneen
Buy new: $14.95
Visiting Chicago, Irish job transition guru-quaintly named Finbarr Kozlowski- presents 8 powerful lessons to a group of disilllusioned, demotivated job seekers. Told in parable form (and laced with large dollops of Irish humor from an author who is an award winning humorist who was once in job transition) this is an honest, poignant, uplifting book to help job seekers through a really tough time.
Ulysses S. Grant : Memoirs and Selected Letters : Personal Memoirs of U.S. Grant / Selected Letters, 1839-1865 (Library of America)Ulysses S. Grant : Memoirs and Selected Letters : Personal Memoirs of U.S. Grant / Selected Letters, 1839-1865 (Library of America) by Ulysses S. Grant
Buy new: $23.10 / Used from: $13.48
Autobiographies tend to be self-serving (Grant makes no reference to his well documented drink problems) and many historians might pick flaws with some of Grant's recollections, but the book is exceptionally well written and interesting. To my surprise, the author comes across as being compassionate and showing a high degree of empathy for many he fought against during the civil war.
Make 'Em Laugh: The Funny Business of AmericaMake 'Em Laugh: The Funny Business of America by Michael Kantor
Buy new: $29.70 / Used from: $17.90
A really good read. Make 'em Laugh provides excellent commentary on many of the people who made America and the world laugh. This is the perfect book for anyone interested in the art of comedy, be they a humorous motivational keynote speaker, motivational humorist or not. The authors provide crisp interesting biographies of almost all of the greats.
Leaders: Strategies for Taking Charge (Collins Business Essentials)Leaders: Strategies for Taking Charge (Collins Business Essentials) by Warren G. Bennis
Buy new: $11.89 / Used from: $3.63
Bennis is one of the best writers on leadership around. He is also quite simply a good writer, presenting easy to read material. Many good lessons and inspirational anecdotes in a fine book.
The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big DifferenceThe Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference by Malcolm Gladwell
Buy new: $8.97 / Used from: $2.74
I try to read this book about once a year as it is in one sense a great motivational book. Gladwell shows how products / concepts become successful once they reach a tipping point. The guy has a very readable style.
The Game-Changer: How You Can Drive Revenue and Profit Growth with InnovationThe Game-Changer: How You Can Drive Revenue and Profit Growth with Innovation by A.G. Lafley
Buy new: $18.15 / Used from: $1.36
I will be very surprised if THE GAMECHANGER does not become required reading in many Fortune 500 executive suites. The co-authors, Lafley and Charan are corporate superstars. Lafley's contributions to the book are particularly interesting as he provides some excellent case study material on how innovation drove growth for key P&G brands.
Greatness: Reagan, Churchill, and the Making of Extraordinary LeadersGreatness: Reagan, Churchill, and the Making of Extraordinary Leaders by Steven F. Hayward
Buy new: $9.32 / Used from: $7.22
A very readable but short book, which is one of the reasons why it cannot credibly deal with "The Making of Extraordinary Leaders." Hayward has an easy writing style and presents a number of good anecdotes about both men, including one extremely humorous one featuring Churchill and political foe Clement Atlee.
Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the White House, A: Humor, Blunders, and Other Oddities From the Presidential Campaign TrailFunny Thing Happened on the Way to the White House, A: Humor, Blunders, and Other Oddities From the Presidential Campaign Trail by Charles Osgood
Buy new: $23.95 / Used from: $0.01
Forrest Gump's phrase comes to mind when reading this book, "Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get." Osgood has put together an excellent selection of humorous quotes and anecdotes from Truman to George W. Bush.
LinkedIn For Dummies (For Dummies (Computer/Tech))LinkedIn For Dummies (For Dummies (Computer/Tech)) by Joel Elad
Buy new: $16.49 / Used from: $6.98
Once upon a time, I thought the "Dummies" series of books was for - well - real dummies. Not like you or me! No more. I now believe that the "Dummies" series provides some of the best crash courses on a range of topics. I've read a lot of books on how to maximize LinkedIn. This is THE best book I have read and well worth reading whether you are a novice or experienced LinkedIn user.
The Art of Innovation: Lessons in Creativity from IDEO, America's Leading Design FirmThe Art of Innovation: Lessons in Creativity from IDEO, America's Leading Design Firm by Tom Kelley
Buy new: $19.77 / Used from: $6.48
Although published in 2001, thus making some of the innovations referenced seem really old, this is a great read for anyone interested in innovation and how to create an innovative culture in any organization.
Coldest Winter, The: America and the Korean WarColdest Winter, The: America and the Korean War by David Halberstam
Buy new: $14.36 / Used from: $2.14
Whew! This is some read - great writing, heroes and villains, fatal errors of judgment and wonderful heroism all encompassed in Halberstam's last book. Most of the dominant players in the book are well known - Truman, MacArthur, Stalin, Mao, Marshall. The author paints good portraits of Truman and MacArthur and their intense dislike for each other.
Some of It Was Fun: Working with RFK and LBJSome of It Was Fun: Working with RFK and LBJ by Nicholas deB Katzenbach
Buy new: $15.55 / Used from: $7.59
Katzenbach is a dry writer who writes in a scholarly style and it takes some time to get used to it. I'm glad I persevered because the book is truly interesting and a real insight into the politics and personnel of the sixties.
Setting the Table: The Transforming Power of Hospitality in BusinessSetting the Table: The Transforming Power of Hospitality in Business by Danny Meyer
Buy new: $10.76 / Used from: $6.00
This is one of the most enjoyable management / customer service books I have read in a long time. In a very open, well written book, Meyer takes us through his management philosophy based on "enlightened hospitality" and placing employees first and then guests, community, suppliers and investors.
I Was There When It Happened: My Life with Johnny CashI Was There When It Happened: My Life with Johnny Cash by Marshall Grant; Chris Zar
Buy new: $16.47 / Used from: $2.68
A fine book about a great performer who was lucky to live as long as he did. Marshall Grant was Johnny Cash's longtime bassist. Here he catalogues Cash's rise to fame, the drug horror he went through and which he forced band members and the long suffering June Carter to endure. Written with affection.
The New Gold Standard: 5 Leadership Principles for Creating a Legendary Customer Experience Courtesy of the Ritz-Carlton Hotel CompanyThe New Gold Standard: 5 Leadership Principles for Creating a Legendary Customer Experience Courtesy of the Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company by Joseph Michelli
Buy new: $12.61 / Used from: $6.49
Parts of this book were so cloying and some of the anecdotes so over the top that I felt like throwing it away, except ... except for the fact that the Ritz-Carlton is one magnificent Brand founded on a great product. As I continued to read, I began to appreciate why the Ritz-Carlton is so successful. You will also and it should help you grow your business.
The Vietnam War: A Concise International HistoryThe Vietnam War: A Concise International History by Mark Atwood Lawrence
Buy new: $12.89 / Used from: $7.96
Attempting to write a history of The Vietnam War in less than 200 pages of text (supported by good notes) is not an easy task. The keen student of Vietnam will find nothing new in this, but if you are looking for a generally well written concise history of this horrible conflict - read Lawrence's work.
The World Is Flat 3.0: A Brief History of the Twenty-first CenturyThe World Is Flat 3.0: A Brief History of the Twenty-first Century by Thomas L. Friedman
Buy new: $10.88 / Used from: $2.95
Tom Friedman is a wonderful writer who conveys complex images and imagery in a very readable and understandable manner. I read the original edition which I thoroughly enjoyed and assume that 3.0 is just as insightful.
Outliers: The Story of SuccessOutliers: The Story of Success by Malcolm Gladwell
Buy new: $11.75 / Used from: $11.24
Gladwell is a fine writer who tends to put his own idiosyncratic spin on things. Some of his observations probably do not stand up to severe auditing, but nevertheless this is a fine read about what makes people successful.
