Customer Reviews
I'm addicted!
I received this mix as a gift about a month ago, and I have listened to it just about everyday since. It is quite addictive.
If you are a fan of Bonobo you have to check this one out. It is more dance oriented than his studio albums. He acheived this by mixing some of his own familiar tracks with some other really choice cuts. As a mix, it has its good and "just OK" points, but as a collection of good tracks, it truly shines.
If you are not a fan of Bonobo, than this will be a unique experience. Bonobo is kind of a combination of world rhythms, jazzy hip-hop injected breaks, acoustic bliss, and superb production. Sometimes dark, sometimes melancholy, sometimes just relaxing and soothing... I recommend all that Bonobo has to offer.
It Came from the Sea , but it stays in my player
It came from the Sea is the second "Bonobo" that I own .I bought Animal Magic after hearing it in a Limo on the way to Chicago O'Hare.
I checked out Amazon for new tunes and found It came from.. and after sampling on the sight decided to buy. This CD would be at home in a club ,kinda sounds like a one off, or at a dinner party. There's no other way to describe it.All of the songs overlap(the melt into each other and there are no breaks.
You start off with Solid Steel Intro- kinda like A.Magic a short welcome then here we go.
Soundcastles- Imagine being in the Carribean
Flutter- kind of a lead off into--
Exploration- Neill Armstrong? a heavier beat some middle eastern influence
leading into
5)Pick up- here it gets interesting a quick social note almost like Dinosaurs from Animal magic into a downbeat with layered synth rhytm
(very cool)
Rolls right into 6)Hey Mr Bundle another get along well please but very quick and unobtrusive social note into
7)Score- kinda jazzy latin definitely could be played live keeps going as 8)Les Fingres
on then to a huge change into a "clubby" 9)Munchies' think non repeating Reggae Rap in a club. this is the only track that has "true" lyrics
next and smoothly into 10)Soul Call 11)Hidden and 12)Recurring
This is a really cool part of the CD its still a club type mix but sooo smooth, these really flow together 13)Change Down - exactly changes down into the Sugar Rhyme (Animal magic ) but its changed from Animal Magic and right much more palatable ,,,slide into 14)Jazz juice- very Latin/ Carribean/ possibly Cuban type influence, kinda gives a break with some jazz speech on astrology which is another "Intro" for a very sultry Cuban night life type track 16)I know a little Cuban fades on into a very "metro" club light show but chill type 17)Change is what we need.
and then out of no where comes Amon Tobin 18)Easy Muffin.
I have no idea how Bonobo gets 17 to blend into 18 but he does.
18) Easy Muffin is very heavy built up synth but the beat is not pounding
it's "very" smooth a little of what sounds like a clarinet and a sax I can't explain but to say it's Amon Tobin , 19)Paths in soft focus kinda Amon Tobinesque but different .This is the wind up part of the CD with 20)Otter's pool being the last track kind of a harp on acid? if you will .Not my favorite but sort of like leaving the theatre after the movie.
Don't think I cater to this type of music strictly this CD is right beside my Godsmack,Incubus,Flyleaf,Garbage,Evans Blue etc..
For driving and most definitely for chillin this and Animal Magic are EXCELLENT especially for the variety and the fact that every song blends to the next on "it came from the sea" for a solid Hour. try the Amazon samples. I hope this helps, enjoy.
For Serious Bonobo Fans
This is an excellent mix album by Bonobo (aka Simon Green), but is a slight let down compared with Bonobo's original work from "Dial M For Monkey" and "Animal Magic". Nevertheless, for the serious Bonobo fans this is a must have - tons of tracks artfully selected and mixed by Green. Some of my favorites on the mix would be one of Bonobo's songs, "Recurring", and "Easy Muffin" by Amon Tobin and "Paths in Soft Focus". The cd progressives from Indian beats to bossa nova and everything in between. I am certainly glad I bought this cd and think it is worth the money for any fan of acid jazz. Buy and enjoy.
