Customer Reviews
As much as I love George...
I can't possible give this collection 5 stars! It loses a star for containing the much shorter "radio friendly" versions of "On Broadway and This Masquerade," and also for not containing the stellar cuts "Moody's Mood and Here Comes The Sun!" Classic Benson! It almost makes up for it with "I Just Wanna Hang Around You," but not quite. I also would love it, if they'd added the fantastic, superb cut "Down Here On The Ground!" But to get that song (and believe me you need it in your collection), you need to purchase his "Weekend In L.A.", CD, which also contain the musical knockouts, "Lady Blue and It's All in the Game!"
Now that being said, understand that there is another version of his "Greatest Hits of All" available for purchase. It's an import which you can get for about $10.00 used; it contains 20 songs (with a 6 song swing/difference). You gain some good stuff on the import, such as "Nature Boy, In Your Eyes, Moody's Mood and Feel Like Makin' Love," but you lose "I Just Wanna Hang Around You, Unchained Melody and 20/20!" So you make the call--I prefer the import, though certain songs are still the short version, at least more of my favorites are included.
Hey maybe, one day they will put out a 4/5 disc retrospective of this man's musical career. He is certainly deserving. Mr. Benson, needs a box set; a big one! He's been around longer than a minute and such a project would be a precious treasure.
Nevertheless, this is a great collection by a great under rated singer and accomplished musician; though a little lacking, it is a nice of mix of his crossover hits and less "Pop" ular tunes!
Jazz or Pop?
I'm new to Jazz (30 or so albums) and not the Jazz expert others may be but this albums genre really doesn't belong in the same catagory as other Jazz music such as that by Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Patricia Barber, etc. What this is is a really fine compilation of very good "pop" tunes. Now that that's out of the way, George Benson is a fantastic musician and vocalist. I wanted to write my opinions on it's genre right up front in case others buy this album with some expectation that you're getting a slice of Jazz, and in my opinion (albeit limited experience) that isn't the case. So while I was dissapointed at first with the type of music on the album, in the end I was satisfied with the music itself. George has a very "creamy" and smooth voice that's timeless. The recordings themselves are excellent. His tunes are ones that you've heard on the radio for years and most likely will hear them for years to come. They're all what I'd call easy listening POP. So if that's what you're looking to buy, this is the album for you.
Used crappy short versions instead of long lp versions
I love George Benson very much he is one of the Jazz greats that are still alive and kickin. But I don't like this album because on Masquerade and On Brodway they used the stupid short versions instead of the LP long versions and since these songs were 2 of his biggest hits it made no since to me. I get sick of GREEDY record companies putting out stuff like this and tarnishing A good name like George Bensen. But there are some great song on this and its a good package job...................
