Customer Reviews
BITTER BITTER BITTER
These little nibs are very bitter. I wouldn't recomend poppin them straight from the bag. They were fabulous melted in a pan with some sweetner, dip with chunked fruit, lay on tray covered with wax paper, and refridgerate for 20 min. The chocolate hardens. Raspberries are my families' favorite but any fruit works! Also, very good sprinkled in warm milk for a homemade hot chocolate. This is a great product for experimental food people. Straight out of the bag... disappointing.
It's healthy, but...
While I'm quite impressed with the health claims for these nibs, frankly they taste like dirt! (Or what I imagine dirt would taste like.)
I don't understand how one reviewer got the nibs to melt. When I tried it, I got hot dirt. I finally settled on grinding them fine, mixing them with peanut butter, sweetener, regular cocoa powder and a little milk.
It's not bad -- but maybe next, I'll just get some really dark chocolate. Life's a little short to be eating dirt.
Good bargain. Roast them first!
If you're reading this review, you're more than likely aware of how good cacao nibs are for you. I'm not enough of a gourmet to tell you whether or not the Navitas Naturals nibs are better than others, since nibs are merely the inside of the husked cocoa nut and there are many, many different varieties of cocoa beans. Some year I'll try others.
What I can tell you is that this is a great bargain, given that most nibs tend to run around the $20 for 1 lb range. Look it up elsewhere, but that's the typical price, and if you have Prime this is an even better deal. Just as importantly, I was startled at other reviews. They should taste like dirt raw - because you shouldn't eat them that way! Toast them like almonds, and while you may lose a few minerals in the process the flavor goes from non-existent to bitter crunchy with a bit of an aftertaste of raw chocolate. It's like toasting nuts; 250-300F for 15-20 minutes and these turn into something that's edible. I tend not to eat them by themselves - if you're looking for a simple antioxidant snack, you might do better with Goji berries - but with yogurt or such they're good. I'm sure someone out there will experiment with the minutae of exactly how long to roast and get them closer to optimal than I have.
Nutritional content from the label since it's not posted: Serving size: 2 tablespoons, 16 per container. 140 Calories/90 Fat Calories. Total Fat 10g/Saturated 3g. No Cholesterol/30mg Sodium. 12g Carbs/8g Fiber, 2g Sugars. 1g Protein/40mg Vitamin C (67% RDA!). What's not on this is the slew of anti oxidants and magnesium that make this a hot health food. Enjoy!
