Needs more ...
OKAY. First... it does everything they say it will do.
....and I highly advise touring their website and looking at the video clips on how to operate it. It's a good product... I am just not sure for the price it was the right one for me... 1/2 the price and I'd probably be fine.
I know that I expect a lot our of technology, and it's programmers.
IF..IF..I bought it 15 years ago I'd have thought it was great, but I expect a lot more out of software now a days as far as how it interfaces with the user. Don't get me wrong it has some power on the back-end. BUT ..When I can for $80 go buy a program to design home / floor plans with interactive 3-D walk through when I am done, and see the trees in the yard grow... add in furniture, edit colors/ textures, and edit it while in 3-d mode. Add in the mix all the games and cell phones now that have more user friendly touch screens and if you have an I-phone or T mobile's Google Phone (which rox btw) you'll sympathize with what I am talking about. Sadly though it's 2008 and I as a user like a nice user friendly intuitive product with good deal more modern design.
Okay It probably would have 4 stars with some STRONG recommendations on how to fix it up...
It lost one for the fact it's really over priced for what you get and then they expect you to dish out about $15-20 for more cookbooks (you do get samples from all cookbooks).
That last star makes up a long list of what I wish it could do...
ONE, I'd like to store more then one pix for a recipe... . IE/ Sugar cookies, different ways to decorate them one example or more per holiday season.
TWO, easier way to input Ingredients and their costs and nutritional information. --- while it can be done, it is not intuitive or user friendly.
THREE, why can't the program except *.jpegs?? that ridiculous I have to convert all the pix from the internet into *.bmp
FOUR, why can't I see the pictures in with the recipes on the view page?? why do I have tab over?? It should be all on one page...and when you print.. it's should be an option to print it with a small thumb-nail pic off to the side.
FIVE, when you input a recipe it has is wonderfully designed drop down menu's for inputting c gets you to cups or t gets you teaspoons or ta gets you tablespoons or br get you brown sugar.. and you can add an new ingredient here..BUT it should ask you at this point IF it's a new ingredient do you wish to input the cost / nutritional info now...
...and that is only a starter list ...
I am I using it? ... Darn right I am, I paid $80 bucks for it. Once you have all your personal recipes and input ALL of the ingredients that you and your family use and the nutritional info and cost for them input. It's okay... it's just getting there... I am still not there.
I does have a lot I like about it... Menu Planning, cost / menu, grocery lists, intuitive drop downs when inputting recipes, it has cookbooks and you can add more, with in the cookbooks are chapters, and with in that recipes. ..it also has Categories.. where you can pull one recipes from any cook book and add them to Categories that you design.. like Halloween, Turkey Dishes, or Italian Dishes.
Still... personally if it was my product, I'd do a face lift. I realize it was probably designed 15 years ago... and again 15 years ago it would have been Great.
Best Choice of Recipe Software
After doing quite a bit of research with recipe software programs, I've found Cook'n to be the best on the market. They have several different features like menu planning and nutritional analysis all bundled in one product. The program has worked great for me! I really like how it is so easy to use and how it allows you to print off cookbooks in a variety of different paper sizes and fonts.
It's true that the interface may not be the most up-to-date but when you compare it to other top sellers, it still exceeds their design and capabilities. Mastercook won't even work on Vista and Living Cookbook has a Windows 3.1 look to it.
The other really cool thing about buying Cook'n is you get a free e-cookbook after you make your purchase. They have over 50 specialized cookbooks that are made to download into the program. I'm even a member of their Cook'n Club which allows you to download a free cookbook each month (www.dvo.com/products_cookn.html)
Even though Cook'n isn't the cheapest, I'm going to be saving money again by being organized in my cooking and eating out less! I'd recommend it to those who like to cook and want to organize their recipes.
Terrible Support
Tried adding another cook'n CD to my old Cd's that were on the computer for a couple years. Long story short, the new Cook'n software was probably more up-to-date compare to the software we had installed from a few years previous.
On the recipe page the software was adding an S at the end of the ingredient unit measurement. 1/2 cup was now 1/2 cups. 2 cups now reads 2 cupss. Useable but not completely to my liking when you compare the price of Cook'n to the other recipe software out there.
You can leave message after message on their phone support and still not get any help. Was able to get a supposed tech one day, his short reply was to send him the titles of the CD's and he would email me the new download links, and couldn't wait to get of the phone.
Sounds like a good quick fix, but I'm still waiting for the miracle cure download links.
I've deleted all the Cook'n software and tried installing just the New cook'n organizer and and one more new CD that I just bought from DVO, and it is still not working correctly. I'll wait another week or two for this miracle download email to show up, but I'll probably be looking for a different Recipe software for sure.
Hope their money back guarantee is better then their terrible support.
