Outstanding!
I am writing this review for those of us who are devoted/tied to this Goddess.
This book is outstanding! I have added it to my library of information on Hecate and the Dark Mother.
This author struck me as writing from a personal experience of this divinity as well as connecting his information to translations of ancient texts that are quoted within the book. He offers hymns, art and explains her various connections to other divinities. He also explains some of Her mysteries, such as the seven caelums.
Although the book is disappointingly small, the information it contains is worth the price of the book, and I am recommending to my personal friends who are of this path. Blessed Be!
Magnificent
The most compelling and accurate books ever to be written on the Goddess Hecate!!! Truly, alot of research and time went into this book so we might have a true resource to go off of when speaking on she, the true Dark Goddess!
East Meets West - With Hecate Frosting
If you're looking for contemporary material on historic Hecate worship or any sort of how-to instruction, this is not the book for you. The author's bio refers to him as a full-time astrologer and Brahmin priest who "shifted all his energy into the Greek Goddess Hecate". This book is an eclectic philosophical mish-mash of East fused with West - of Kali worship concepts, Hindu and Buddhist philosophy, the author's personal system of astrology, a smattering of the Chaldean Oracles and Greek Magical Papyri, all with a coating of Hecate "frosting" and a dash of Dark Paganism for good measure.
The actual genuine and only sourced historic and trustworthy material on Hecate is found at the very end of the book in approximately 12 pages lifted word for word from the Theoi Project online - in these hard economic times, why should anyone pay $15.99 for information they can access for FREE online? The rest is just "soft polytheism" (all Dark Goddesses are One Dark Goddess) and reductionist Wicca that essentially says Kali and Hecate are the same Dark Goddess. The author then applies and retranslates titles/images of Kali to Hecate and then shrouds it all in Latin - even retranslating familiar Tantric, Hindu and Vedic concepts into Latin - for example saying that Maya (illusion) is Maia - one of the Greek Pleiades and later a Goddess of Spring. Sorry but sounding alike doesn't make it the same - ask any etymologist.
Ancient Roman Wiccans? Although an intriguing idea, the "Viccanus" material beginning on page 51 is highly speculative. The author says that the word Wicca comes from the Latin Viccanus (sic) -actually it's vicanus - one "c" - technically meaning villager - a synonym for a pagan or rustic living outside the Pomerium of Rome. It even states the ancient Viccanus (i.e. ancient Wiccans) practiced a skull meditation first taught by Buddha that spread through Europe - an interesting concept without a doubt - but sources please. An inexcusable error appears on the back cover - it says "Second addition" - instead of Second Edition. Such typographical errors are avoided with a careful proofreader - even with a self-published book such as this. It's hard to take it seriously. It boggles the mind what you can sell people these days.
If you are a Hellenic or Roman Reconstructionist, or anyone (Witch or otherwise) who encountered Hecate through Classical scholarly sources, this is definitely NOT the book for you. If you enjoy reading one person's eclectic speculative mystic vision growing out of Unverified Personal Gnosis (UPG) and groove on having California gurus who have a soul-patch and wear lots of fabulous bling - then knock yourselves out.
