A Wonderful Movie
Out of all of the different versions of Black Beauty this is by far my favorite. It is my all time favorite movie. I watched it nearly everyday as a child; as a result my movie is quite worn. But anyways this movie is about a high-spirited young lady, Anne, who is given a foal, Black Beauty, by her father, Squire Wendon. Black Beauty becomes the center of Anne's attention. After a handsome visitor from America starts to win Anne's affection the squire realizes that Anne is growing up so he send her away to finishing school for a year. During Anne's absence Beauty becomes ill and the Squire orders the horse shot. The horse's caretaker doesn't have the heart to kill it so he send it off to live somewhere else until Anne returns. When Anne returns home and learns of her horses fate, the horse's caretaker and her go on a desperate search to find him. At last the two are reunited.
A PLEASANT FILM
Mona Freeman stars as the nineteenth century British girl who is given a colt by her father to teach her responsibility in this version of Anna Sewell's classic novel. The girl raises the pony into a prize horse, but tragedy strikes when the animal falls into the hands of an unscrupulous party who uses it as a workhorse. After a frantic search, Freeman finally locates "Black Beauty" in a burning stable....Not a bad version of the story, however better performances and colour photography would have been advantageous. BLACK BEAUTY was filmed priorly in 1933 (with Esther Ralston) and in 1971 (with Mark Lester).
