Artistic Anatomy (Practical Art Books)Artistic Anatomy (Practical Art Books) by Dr. Paul Richer
Buy new: $16.47 / Used from: $8.55
Really the only reference I study for musculature
Classical Drawing Atelier: A Contemporary Guide to Traditional Studio PracticeClassical Drawing Atelier: A Contemporary Guide to Traditional Studio Practice by Juliette Aristides
Buy new: $19.77 / Used from: $15.99
Great book... teaches you how to think, and a little about drawing in there as well. Composition, balance, value, it's all covered in here.
Dynamic Figure DrawingDynamic Figure Drawing by Burne Hogarth
Buy new: $14.93 / Used from: $9.92
Great for foreshortening, also good insight on shape relationships when dealing with bodyparts
Creating Characters with Personality: For Film, TV, Animation, Video Games, and Graphic NovelsCreating Characters with Personality: For Film, TV, Animation, Video Games, and Graphic Novels by Tom Bancroft
Buy new: $13.57 / Used from: $12.92
Great look into how we can use shapes in every aspect of drawing to push the dynamism
Classical Painting Atelier: A Contemporary Guide to Traditional Studio PracticeClassical Painting Atelier: A Contemporary Guide to Traditional Studio Practice by Juliette Aristides
Buy new: $23.10 / Used from: $28.94
same as classical drawing, but elaborates for the painter... It contains a few chapters that Drawing Atelier had, but is about 2ce the size, and more about painting (I assume that's obvious).
Dynamic Anatomy: Revised and Expanded EditionDynamic Anatomy: Revised and Expanded Edition by Burne Hogarth
Buy new: $16.47 / Used from: $15.87
Have thumbed through this, don't use it all the time, but is a nice reference, and more artistic than academic.
Bridgman's Life DrawingBridgman's Life Drawing by George B. Bridgeman
Buy new: $22.80 / Used from: $19.38
I believe this is the compilation of a bunch of his books on anatomy... if this is it, it is nice to see the dichotomy between his book and Hogarth. Hogarth draws rounded subjects; Bridgeman never met an angle he didn't like.
The New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain: A Course in Enhancing Creativity and Artistic ConfidenceThe New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain: A Course in Enhancing Creativity and Artistic Confidence by Betty Edwards
Buy new: $21.56 / Used from: $12.16
This is a great companion to have, it covers a lot of principals you might already be familiar with, but it is more about reasoning and thought than anything. Not completely necessary, but a good book to round out a collection.
The Natural Way to Draw: A Working Plan for Art StudyThe Natural Way to Draw: A Working Plan for Art Study by Kimon Nicolaides
Buy new: $10.88 / Used from: $4.15
This is like a workout schedule for artists... However, access to figure drawing is a must, the "coach" recommends something like 9 hours a week, which is great for certain areas of the US, just not the one I currently live.
Virtual Pose 3: The Ultimate Visual Reference Series for Drawing the Human FigureVirtual Pose 3: The Ultimate Visual Reference Series for Drawing the Human Figure by Mario Henri Chakkour
Buy new: $23.09 / Used from: $8.98
Eh, this one might be hard to get into the house... It's just a series of books featuring nude models. The books come with CDs and 360 degree turn-arounds of each pose, while the books pages each contain about 6 angles of each pose. Good reference, but not amazing poses.
Facial Expressions: A Visual Reference for ArtistsFacial Expressions: A Visual Reference for Artists by Mark Simon
Buy new: $14.93 / Used from: $13.41
I don't own this, but think about it every time I shop at amazon... especially with the new kids version, sounds like it would be a pretty good buy.
