uniting mind, body and spirit through ancient and modern practices
By Chris Waterous
In the Judeo-Christian tradition, we're used to denying our bodies and discounting them in favor of focusing on the Spirit. Lee Harrington demonstrates the many ways in which we can use the body and its sensations as a gateway to spiritual experiences. Whether it's growth, healing, catharsis, insight or union with the Divine, Harrington explains the tools ancient and modern practitioners have used to achieve these ends, pulling from many cultures, religions and current teachers. Lee discusses the risks and rewards along each of the 8 paths in his system in a very accessible, entertaining style, often illustrating his points with anecdotes from personal experience. This wide-ranging, well-thought-out book is a valuable resource for those who can see the potential of uniting spirituality, physicality and even sexuality in their personal practice.
I must make clear, as the other reviewers have, that this book is not for those new to either bdsm or Paganism or magickal practice, but for those who already have a grounding in those worlds looking to go further.
My only critiques of the book are that it could have used a more thorough proofreader, and that for me the section on childbirth as an ordeal path was extremely disappointing, saying nothing about the actual experience of the woman. Otherwise it would have gotten 5 stars.

A fantastic guide (for beginners and the experienced alike) to incorporating sacred sexuality into kink
By Tallie
Sacred Kink is an incredible look at combining kink and sacred sexuality. Lee Harrington provides an amazingly wide scope and range of activities, practices, and spiritual paths that readers can combine in a myriad of ways to construct their own personalized path. There is no "one true way" here, but the encouragement of exploration and owning the path that you choose and all that comes with it. No one's sacred or profane is elevated above anyone else's. The idea of the sacred is explored with all paths being valid and equal, drawing connections between them, rather than using them as means of division as so much of society does. Lee also explores all of this with a refreshing element of humor which keeps the book from becoming too heavy, which would be easy to do given the subject matter.
Each chapter is structured such that there is a living example of the path discussed in the form of erotica in three parts interspersed throughout the chapter. These were some of my favorite parts, as they offer ideas of how to practically apply the tools within the chapter. They paint the picture beyond the theory and for me, were what helped me to visualize the practices to see if that was a path I might be interested to pursue.
Each chapter details a variety of traditional tools, as well as kink tools. There are many tools from many different traditions, and they are well organized. The many headings make locating the desired information simple, which is great if someone has a question and you want to refer them to a specific passage.
The writing is authentic, genuine, and evocative. There were definitely passages that stopped me in my tracks, quotes I needed to copy down into my journal for quick reference later. While I truly believe the book in its entirety is excellent, the sections on Mastery and Slavery as spiritual paths, two-footing, the entire section on the ordeal path, and Lee's essay on the meaning of leather included in the appendix were some of my favorites.
There is a wealth of information here. I read the entire book from cover to cover, and have planned a second, more in depth reading/study. I strongly believe this a book worth reading and re-reading. I can't wait to see what discoveries and insight come with a second reading! The study questions are very thought provoking, and I plan to go through those on the second readthrough.
Summary:
- inspiring
- not overly serious
- fun to read
- well organized
- authentic
- great for beginners/the experienced alike

Eye-opening and path-opening book
By Maia T.
There is very little available material on the spiritual aspects of kink, and almost none of use in shamanic work, in spite of the natural connections between the two. This book was a surprise and a revelation to me; I bought it expecting to see mostly discussion of pain and sensory deprivation as spiritual tools, but it's much more detailed and complete than that, and has helped me more clearly define what I'm seeking from my chosen practices and to prepare for aspects I might otherwise have gone in not expecting.
