In volume 2 of the five-volume The Truth in Crisis series, author Hefley plows on into events of the mid 1980s, when the controversy spread from the convention floor to SBC agencies and seminaries and into state conventions and Baptist colleges, and follows events through the eve of the 1987 convention in St. Louis. These were the crucial years when the convention's conservatives pushed their march forward against a rising tide of moderate resistance, culminating in the massive 1985 convention in Dallas-the world's largest-ever democratic voting assembly gathering in one place. Parallel to that, the conservatives were moving slowly from being a minority faction on the boards of trustees of the convention's agencies and schools, and by 1987 the first of the institutions was beginning to succumb to conservative rule.Dr. Larry L. Lewis, former president of the SBC's Home Mission Board, writes in the foreword to volume 2, "It is not essential that Southern Baptists agree on every jot and tittle of doctrine, or follow any person or group's positions. It is vitally important that we know and understand the various movements within our convention and the concerns expressed. For this reason, I salute not only Jim Hefley and this new book, but also Baptist Press and our denominational editors who keep us informed on what is happening."

Editorial Reviews
From the Publisher
In volume 2, Hefley wakes up Southern Baptists who might be sitting around in their complacency believing that the controversy will go away. With his continuing penchant for fairness and his meticulous and dogged reportorial skills, he continues to show the deeply rooted nature of the issues that divide Southern Baptists in the defining days of the conservative resurgence. He does so because of the great responsibility he feels for people in the pew who deserve to know how their tithe money is being spent and what type of leaders their church's representatives are electing. While criticized at the time, Hefley's work will go down in history as one of the most important documents about the controversy.
From the Author
"I write and publish as one deeply concerned about the future of my denomination. As a rebellious 16-year-old, I was led to Christ by a Baptist home missionary. I attended a Southern Baptist college and seminar and was ordained to the ministry by a Southern Baptist church. I served as founding pastor of three Southern Baptist churches and am now on the staff (part-time) of a Baptist college. In this book and the previous one, I have written about my extended 'family.' If through reading these two volumes, members of the family called Southern Baptists come to better understand one another and the issues which have raised so much debate and trauma among us, then the tedious toil of recent months will have been worthwhile."
About the Author
Jim Hefley, a longtime Southern Baptist, with degrees from two Southern Baptist schools, has pastored Southern Baptist Convention churches, written for the Baptist Sunday School Board, and has been writer-in-residence at Hannibal-LaGrange College, an institution of the Missouri Baptist Convention. In 1982 the American Association of Evangelical Publishers awarded him its gold medallion for best biography book, for By Their Blood: Christian Martyrs of the Twentieth Century.
Customer Reviews
A must have resource for all Christians today.
This book, (along with the others in the series), is the most exhaustive, even-handed, and thoroughly researched account of the conservative resurgence in the Southern Baptist Convention that I have found anywhere. Every Southern Baptist and, I believe, every Christian, should read this and the complete series from cover-to-cover. A thoroughly excellent resource and a must have for your personal library.
