I have enjoyed numerous books by Henri Nouwen. This one is where my affection for him began. What I have found from talking with others is that this tale of his faith journey doesn't appeal to everyone but if you like it, it will resonate deeply.

Spiritual Direction and MeditationSpiritual Direction and Meditation by Thomas Merton

One of my few true heroes, Merton produced so much wonderful writing and reflection that it is difficult to name a favorite. I love to read and re-read especially his work relating to contemplative prayer. But I chose this one for my list because despite its brevity, it deeply yet simply addresses two important aspects of my faith life.

The Cloud of Unknowing (Harper Collins Spiritual Classics)The Cloud of Unknowing (Harper Collins Spiritual Classics) by Harpercollins Spiritual Classics

This book is said to be "at the core of medieval mystical theology." No one knows its author, but I would like to thank him for introducing me to a timeless Christian mysticism that is accessible for anyone who wants to commit to getting to know God more intimately.
Rich Mullins: A Devotional Biography: An Arrow Pointing to HeavenRich Mullins: A Devotional Biography: An Arrow Pointing to Heaven by James Bryan Smith
Buy new: $10.19 / Used from: $4.99
Perhaps this seems out of place on a list with so many time-tested Christian classics. But I still love the music of the late Rich Mullins and feel like I miss him every day since his death in 1997. This book, written by one of his friends, give you insight into Rich's life. It also gives you an indication that Rich had a mystical quality to his faith and a deep love of Jesus.
