Are we hard-wired for spiritual experience? And if so, why? On God and the Brain, Dr. Andrew Newberg reveals surprising new evidence that the human capacity for transcendent consciousness may have been a critical factor in our survival and evolutionary success as a species. This pioneer of brain studies and co-author of Why God Won't Go Away (Ballantine, 2006) presents the first audio course on his groundbreaking research into the fascinating links between spirituality, biology, and the evolution of the brain. With new material from Dr. Newberg's research available nowhere else, this 3-CD program features: * How prayer and meditation alter and enhance the physiology of the brain * "Neurotheology": how our brain chemistry shapes our sense of morality, meaning, and divine connection * Inside the heads of the optimist and the pessimist--exploring the survival value of positive thinking * The biology of forgiveness: why this spiritual act boosts the health of the nervous system * A special guided exercise for enhancing the listener's neurological capacity for balance and peace Whether one is a devout Christian, a Buddhist meditator, or even a dedicated atheist, the part of the brain that controls spiritual experience has a profound impact on our entire identity. On God and the Brain, listeners join Dr. Andrew Newberg for a lucid and enthralling exploration of the uncharted regions of the mind--and what this new science means for our health, beliefs, and quality of life.

Customer Reviews
Solid and Interesting
Dr. Newberg does a very solid job explaining the issues around the interface between religion and science. He's very clear and balanced--unlike many who stretch scientific maybes into religious "confirmations." While this solid and balanced perspective probably won't wow many the way Depak Chopra or "What the Bleep Do You Know" might, it's more honest and keeps one grounded and well informed about this importance topic/issue[s].
Please note, I haven't quite finished listening to God and the Brain, but after coming across this listing and seeing it didn't have any reviews posted thought it worthy to have something up. [I may edit this after finishing.]
GREAT CD'S FOR FUTHER LEARNING + UNDERSTANDING.
These 3 cd's are wonderful for further undestanding of why we belief what we do.
Istcd is an overview of what you may know already with good examples.
2nd cd - gives research data and further reasons for why you believe what you do, linking to brain and a named gene/hormone affect that is present in some people and not so much in others (atheists or non spiritual individuals.) Reasearch details giving technology used to verify and why our beliefs get reinforced by neuron pathways being activated over and over again- therefore strengthening our present bielief system and affecting actual brain functioning. (Affects for atheists and the more spiritualy minded.)
3rd CD linking to the above effects on health, mental attitudes, spirituality or non spirituality affect etc.and much more! How if affects out attitudes and behaviours and personal belief system.
You can learn a lot about yourself and others from these cd's!
Wonderful stuff from science linking with spiritual beliefs... or non beliefs.
