Tyranny of TherapyTyranny of Therapy by Division By Zero
Buy new: $15.99 / Used from: $15.27
Dark, innovative, and incredibly addictive. Drips with crunch, technical wizardry, and atmosphere yet features an interesting lyrical premise. A debut effort to boot! Definitely my top pick of '07.
The Machinations of DementiaThe Machinations of Dementia by Blotted Science
Buy new: $19.99 / Used from: $58.20
WOW! Ron Jarzombek has always been among my favorite guitarists and songwriters, but he and his fellow bludgeoners have outdown everyone here! Among the thickest, most-complex, boiling basslines I've every heard (felt?). Incredible percussion from Behold the Arctopus' Charlie Zelany (his best effort to date). This could be the heaviest fusion album ever conceived.
FormlessFormless by Aghora
Buy new: $15.00 / Used from: $11.30
Features an entrancing melodic technical death metal-neoclassical fusion Middle Eastern amalgam behind beautiful operatic female vocals. Dobles shreds and legendary Sean Reinart (apparently a studio musician here) has never sounded better behind the kit.
Prominence and DemiseProminence and Demise by Winds
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $2.47
I've been a fan since the band's inception. I find this to be their best yet. Unique, technical, and sometimes awe-inspiring. If you enjoy heavy, challenging music layered atop folkish, sometimes nearly spoken-word, vocals, then you will find no better.
Cortical TectonicsCortical Tectonics by Canvas Solaris
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $7.99
Another outstanding technical fusion effort. Far more jazz and far less death metal than Blotted Science. Complex, compelling, and invariably interesting.
Paradise LostParadise Lost by Symphony X
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $4.41
I don't need to write much here. One of my favorite bands for a long time, period. Romeo and Pinnela have never sounded better, although I was slightly disappointed by the lyrics. Even so, a must own.
The Second PhilosophyThe Second Philosophy by Nahemah
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $6.84
Where did this come from? Outstanding debut effort that reminds one of Opeth mixed with "Years in Waste"-era Omnium Gatherum. Exceptional melody and dynamics with ample emotion in an extreme metal guise. Highly recommended.
Presents: Ziltoid the OmniscientPresents: Ziltoid the Omniscient by Devin Townsend
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $13.25
The quirky brilliance that is Devin Townsend. Who else could create an appealing prog metal CD based upon an alien self-proclaimed guitar hero in search of our world's finest coffee?
The Origins Of RuinThe Origins Of Ruin by Redemption
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $9.87
The first several tracks are phenomenal, with more technicality than Redemption has featured on previous releases. Unfortunately, there is filler toward the end. Even so, Ray alder sounds better than ever, and this is a must own for prog metal diehards or fans of FW.
The Forgotten GoddessThe Forgotten Goddess by Echoes of Eternity
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $5.18
This surprised me a bit. Emotive female vocals shrouded by a gripping, melodic, yet heavy muscial backdrop. Just enough variation to keep things lively and fresh.
AnimaAnima by Spheric Universe Experience
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $14.96
Perhaps not as strong as their debut, this is still a standout for melodic prog metal. Many clever foot-tapping tracks with strong vocals yet crunching riffs and intricate accompaniment.
The Insight EyeThe Insight Eye by Illogicist
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $4.98
My favorite technical death metal release of '07. Chops galore!
Solens RotterSolens Rotter by Vintersorg
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $5.00
This beats Borknagar's latest and also nearly made my Top 10. Complex Nordic folk metal featuring a fantastic vocal performance by Vintersorg (best in recent memory) and the usual virtuoso effort of Mickelson on percussion.
The BlueThe Blue by Novembre
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $8.95
Not quite the allure or emotion of Materia, yet nearly a Top 10.
ArtemisiaArtemisia by Sun Caged
Buy used from: $14.68
Not as strong as their debut, but still several outstanding and innovative tracks bolstered by the jaw-dropping fretwork of Marcel Coenen.
A Lullaby for the DevilA Lullaby for the Devil by Dead Soul Tribe
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $5.00
I was expecting more given the lasting appeal of prior releases. Production is muddy and this lacks the tribal rhythms and psychotic waltz-isms that I've grown to love. Still, a few outstanding tracks make this worthy of an honorable mention
